One can only hope that this nation rises up and shows it's disapproval of terrible leadership one day soon. If the goons attempt to steal another election, hopefully millions upon millions will take to the streets and just shut this nation down until the toxic and spectacularly immoral elites step aside. There won't be another coup. There is no moral authority to condone one.

Not easy to do that , the Filipinos being the only case I can think of all those years ago. After

  • This government had plenty of opportunities to introduce regulation for the cannabis industry but did nothing until they felt the need to get revenge on Anutin.  Taking down a 40 billion baht industry

We must maintain hope and the good youth of Thailand must maintain hope. It will happen, it's just a matter of time. Same applies to Burma and Cambodia.

absolute and utter tripe!

You do however make a point - once prohibition was enforced organised crime flourished and that is exactly the same with drugs - just look at the US "war on drugs" - an utter flop!

Legalize all drugs and this problem goes away. And dont try and tell me it will create more users. It wont. Just a whole lot less crime. Users gonna use by hook or by crook.

trouble is the cannabis debate is devoid of any logic, evidence or science... just a load of bigots obsessed with the idea "drugs are bad".

If that were true, coffee & alcohol would be banned.  Coffee is the most widely used psychoactive drug in the world.  They pushed it to numb people from the effects of wireless radiation.  I have documented this in a video.  They want people to have the most harmful drugs, while restricting the good ones. Obviously most people realize that last part.

Sounds like the same kind of shaming tactics married people use to get us to join their ranks and be as miserable as they are.

We have a name for those ppl and it rhymes with ducks.

As all the potheads realise there halcyon days are coming to an end the usual subjects are brought as if it’s going to be a game changer. It’s not, jobs will be lost but not as many as projected and the same for the income figures.
So get used to the idea stoners that hanging out in public puffing away will soon be a thing of the past.

I doubt many members on this forum who use cannabis do it whilst "hanging out in public puffing away"

The same way  that those who enjoy a drink do not end up either in a fight or comatose in a back alley soaked in their own urine and vomit.

Cannabis advocates are set to rally at the Ministry of Public Health in Bangkok on Monday, opposing the government's move to recriminalise cannabis, which was delisted from the national narcotics list three years ago.

Dubbed "Operation 7-7," the protest aims to challenge Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, who supports limiting cannabis to medical use under new regulations.

The rally's organisers claim that the proposed changes threaten the livelihoods of small growers and entrepreneurs who have benefitted from the plant's legalisation.

Chokwan "Kitty" Chopaka, a prominent advocate, announced plans to camp at the ministry to push for a Cannabis Act, highlighting the possible monopolisation by larger interests.

The cannabis industry, once considered a vibrant sector boosting Thailand's economy and tourism, faces an uncertain future. The re-listing could force thousands of small businesses to shut down, raising concerns about potential economic fallout.

The debate also includes fears about underage use, with some schools and parents worried about cannabis leading youths to try other substances.

The Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection noted a rise in prosecutions of young people since cannabis was decriminalised in 2022, with a significant number related to cannabis offences.

Amidst these concerns, Daycha Siripatra, a leader in the cannabis community, argues that cannabis has positively impacted the economy, particularly for local farmers and tourism, drawing visitors from countries where it remains banned.

Siripatra also critiques the new regulations, suggesting they cater to political interests and potentially remove restrictions on sales to those under 20.

Meanwhile, Dr Thiravat Hemachudha stresses that patients using cannabis for health reasons have reported significant benefits, and a policy reversal could hinder more integrated treatment practices across the country.

Despite domestic tensions, research on cannabis continues worldwide, with a focus on the non-psychoactive compounds CBD and CBN, which remain costly imports for Thailand.

The ongoing debate encapsulates broader economic, medical, and social dimensions that remain unresolved.

Looks like skunk being grown under lights

Very strong look at the heads

Know it's old topic now.  Gotta think it was effecting the image Thailand wanted to present to attract foreign Tourist and Business Investment.

The weed shops spread faster than the Flu and gave the public perception that drugs were okay.  Weed shops near temples, schools it didn't matter.

Could it have been a money grab? Who knows. It was an obvious choice to use as they knew the investment behind the business would be there and they could grab some quick tax dollars then move on.

I feel for the people who are less experienced and knowledgeable and fell for the old Bait and Switch.  Invested in Thailand then the rules of the game changed so the house has an unfair advantage.

It will certainly damage the criminal networks.  Some though should still be targetted by the state & be illegal due to the extreme danger they represent to those using (synthetic opiates & others [cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, nitazines, etc.].

Cannabis is mild , relatively, compared to alcohol & tobacco, yet is often targeted while alcohol & tobacco are used for government revenue.

Drug policy in most countries in non-rational desite attempts occassionally to rationalise it (David Nutt was blocked from develop a rational UK policy on drugs).

Do the bureaucrats have the authority to make this change?  Doesn't this change require the legislature to pass legislation?

The current instability around a number of issues has made me reconsider moving to Thailand.

No joke, neither about jobs nor about tax revenue. The proposed restrictions are a betrayal of all those who have invested time and money (including savings) into the cannabis business. Utterly disgraceful manoeuvre by Somsak, Thaksin's  grovelling puppet.

weed...the product that gave the Thai economy a kickstart after covid...do i need to say more?

IMO not at all.  The Cannabis industry throughout Thailand and its population of almost 72 million (2025 Google) is a mere drop in the ocean!

My friend borrowed money and invested 20 million Baht in building a cannabis farm when it was legalised... he is about half way in paying back the money he has borrowed, but now hea  has no way to make that... so this affects are his life until he dies, his family and the other 20 people working for him are also affected.

So, as many people in rural areas already have their economy in a disaster state, this will not make it better for any normal people.

I believe Thailand is also pressurized by ASEAN Neighbours for keeping the Weed policy, There have been many countless cases of weed being trafficked overseas and also the frequent use by citizens around ASEAN.  This make this Policy not popular with neighbouring countries and it also mock them for their reason for not opening up like Thailand.

In addition, the social consequences are reported in local Thai news... children have been taking weed. Understandably, the weed shops are all over and near schools. This will be the cost that Thailand needs to pay - a lost generation.

With the greatest respect to your friend, surely he will still be able to grow and sell cannabis to the medical industry which is legal?

This medical cannabis industry will not be so large so unable to absorb all the small entrepreneurs - the big players will lock them out. Many will still lose everything, not that HiSo Thais care.

Still a good place.  Most people are wonderful.

I for one loathe all this pot shop culture and paraphernalia and weed tourists. Go to Amsterdam.

Along with the "usual" sex tourist Thailand is getting more and more scumbags trying to export weed on "vacation" excursions to the country.

There have been quite a few news stories about Weed shops being robbed and scumbag foriegners caught leaving Thailand with kilos of weed.

I'm glad they are reversing the laws. I hope we'll go back to not having to smell pot smoke every other minute on my walks along the beach. Maybe stop the weed tourists from coming too.

What about the economic damage caused by people being stoned all the time? Dope makes people lazy.

You have got to be kidding me.   JHC dude!!

And let's be clear about how the new rules will actually work:

CANNABIS USER: "My wittle pinkie hurts!"

CANNABIS DOCTOR: "He is you medicine. You want jub jub? 2000 baht krapom."

Seems like every time Thailand takes a step forward then they end up taking two steps backwards doesn’t make any logical sense to me TIT

Absolutely correct, they have low end very low intelligence, terrible leadership, with absolutely no vision on any level, and to top that off they're unelected, and they are appointed by a man who has become the second most toxic man in the nation.

Seems like you're operating from a position of zero knowledge, the retail market is going to be limited dramatically, so nobody knows how much demand is going to be affected, nor how difficult it will be to move the wholesale product.
