Foreigners Flaunting Wealth in Thailand: How Is It Viewed?

Featured Replies

Sorry, but this is just nonsense, this country is now attracting wealthy people by the hatful.
Would you prefer to live in Zug or Lichtenstein?

What is for sure, is that non (very few ) of the seriously wealthy ,moving to Thailand , would consider anywhere in Isarn as a future home!

So I doubt they will be interfering much with local village life, higher than average balconies or not!

Yes, but only the criminal element.

Some of those types as well , for sure, but also, lots of wealthy people who made their money legally who are attracted by the light taxation and attractive (relatively)  visa options.

in general, most ,seriously, wealthy people don’t want to flaunt their wealth. With certain exceptions ie Weddings in Venice etc.

The only person I have ever seen flaunting purported wealth was an ageing Thai lady. She got hold of a farangy, next she is covered in gold, wears shorts up her arris and hair doo's that belong on a much younger lady.

It is actually quite embarrassing to see.........🤭

The well off Thai folk I know, rarely wear gold in their daily life, or even at parties....

Actually a valid comment to a certain degree.

Thai may be willing to display gold on specific occasions but generally realize the very real risk of doing so in most situations. That explains why although investing in gold is usually in adornments rather that simple gold bars .

But to the gold plated items sold in the foyer of many shopping  malls and flaunted regularly in public are evidence to the more sceptical of probable deception in the interest of "face".

every time I see somebody driving a hugely expensive sports car, or wearing really ostentatious clothes, or a lot of expensive jewelry, it just looks kind of ridiculous to me. It reeks of insecurity and it's just not a polite statement, and feels like they are saying I have so much more than you do, and I want you to notice me, acknowledge me, and respect me for my money.

Because you cant afford one. Your every post reeks of jealousy

Very poorly, as Thais who come into money only build very modest looking houses and drive very unassuming cars. Ostentatious spending is unheard of in Thailand...True, some of the houses in the village look like butcher's baroque, but probably Ukrainians or Russians.

Have you ever wondered where these grandiose mansions that feature in the nightly lagorns on Thai television? You know, the grand, multi-storeyed, multi-bedroomed and chandeliered palaces with sweeping dual staircases from the vestibule, high walls around manicured lawns where peacocks stroll past air-conditioned multi-car garages, chock full of red-plated Maybach's and Bugatti's?

I did, until I landed a job shooting seismic over Bangkok's west side, out by Thawi Watthana, not so far from Mahidol Uni. I'm sure there are all sorts of high-end enclaves elsewhere in the city, with nary a farang in sight.

What about posters who flaunt their wealth on the forum, but their Facebook posts show otherwise?

Or those that post pictures of a good-looking woman and expect us to believe them when they say it's their wife?

All the time. I think about it a lot. Especially during sex.

But then I look at the Thai soap operas with prostitutes, and it's clear those Thais are masters of understatement. Even flashy shoes are eschewed for sandals. That Buddhist modesty.

Indeed, they are only marginally sadder than the pair of you. Actually, thinking about it, they may still have the edge on you pair...🤔

Truth is that everything is fake now... especially on the internet.

I'm a cheap Charlie, as no way, would I spend more than ฿3M for a house.  But I also don't want to live in a big metro or tourist area, so don't need to.

Saw a townhouse w/surfside view the other day and was curious,

so had the wife call & ask :w00t: :cheesy:

For 7.5 M baht, I can drive <10 mins to the surf for that view.  Sit in Mira coffee shop, far right of the mall.  7M buys a lot of coffee & pastry.

3 story, but not wide, perfect location and across the street from lovely bay, but ugly A$$ wires in front of balcony, and the price.   If aroun the corner from were we live, may 2M, and that's a stretch.   Have neighbor with stand alone house w/ small lot for less than 3M.

If you have the money, spend it. I get it about 3 mil getting a livable house but 10 mil is about where in my view homes enter the villa category.  Not talking about Isaan but the surrounding Pattaya area and down to Bang Saray.

Exactly. I can see Bignok lurking and just waiting to hear what he has to say on the subject taking into account he has about 15Aus$ in the bank.

Don’t worry, that sorry troll will be back any minute now disturbing everyone again and racking up thumbs down, the likes of which nobody has ever seen before. What an utter train-wreck that thing is. Cant post now, but still lurks and reads everything. Needs a life. Pitiful.

Maybe they just like the car and clothes they are wearing and not trying to show off.. Sounds like someone that is jealous.

are you serious.. I know several Thai's that drive Mercedes but live in a shoebox.  I asked my one friend why he doesn't get a better place and a cheaper car.  He said nobody sees where he lives, everyone see's his car.

Not all but most Thai's get some money they are out buying expensive things to impress everyone.

just saying what??? That one guy likes cars and the other doesn't?

That one is a billionaire (therefore can afford as many cars as he wants)  and the other isn't.

Jay Leno has a big car collection, what does that mean?

Ah, but it's usually the E Class correct? Never the flashy G-Class.

Mercedes has terrible sales figures in Thailand for a resaon.

Most wealthy people buy citizenship, what's Thailand offer a million baht visa 😁 I think you are confused what wealth is

I wear an armitron 8 USD digital watch I bought at K Mart, yes a K Mart many years ago.  Now and then when accosted by the grope, distract and pickpocket thieves they see the watch and walk away.  Has happened twice.

Some of the financially successful foreigners living in Thailand display their wealth by buying luxury condos or building large houses, driving expensive cars, wearing flashy designer clothing, and openly spending big in restaurants and nightlife spots.

These displays of affluence can particularly stand out in rural or less economically developed areas of the country, where local incomes are quite a lot lower and there isn't much of a local middle class.

I wonder how local Thai communities perceive foreigners who make their money visibly seen by others in Thailand. Are they admired for their success, spending and helping of the local economy, or do they spark jealousy, distaste and resentment among locals?

Seems to be a jealously written malevolent post.
