Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is ramping up efforts to eliminate illegal cannabis products nationwide. This crackdown follows a concerning incident where a two-year-old girl required hospital treatment after accidentally ingesting cannabis-infused jelly.

Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has directed the FDA and provincial health offices to rigorously inspect and remove illicit cannabis products. The emphasis is on ensuring cannabis is used legally for medical purposes only, with severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for violations.

Dr Surachoke Tangwiwat, Secretary General of the FDA, detailed that inspections are ongoing. Notably, on June 22, checks at 21 establishments revealed infractions at eight locations. Over 470 items, such as jellies, brownies, and chocolates laced with cannabis, were confiscated due to improper permits or inadequate Thai labelling. Twenty-four products are currently being analysed, with prosecution pending if THC content exceeds 0.2%.

Random checks on imported gelatin jellies have also uncovered licorice and fruit-flavoured products with THC levels above the legal limit. Importers are now facing legal action, and the products have been seized. Stricter inspections at all checkpoints have been mandated to curtail the entry of similar items.

The FDA urges the public to exercise caution when purchasing cannabis-infused food. These products, classified as controlled food, require proper authorisation, a serial number, and clear labelling in Thai. Violations could lead to imprisonment for up to a year or fines up to ฿100,000.

Suspicious products or unauthorised items can be reported to the FDA through their hotline at 1556, Line@FDAThai, Facebook: FDAThai, or the website www.fda.moph.go.th.

This decisive action highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring compliance with regulations. As inspections intensify, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products to help maintain safety across the nation.

kids thinking these sweets with adults leaving them laying around is quite frankly criminal and the adults likely spaced out and off their heads while in charge of infants, one of the reasons why weed should never have been legalized in Thailand

No surprise here.... anything to do with weed is always negative, can't believe a 2 year old kid gets sick and admitted to hospital and people just resort to a flurry of ban drink and derergents posts

Also, knives should be illegal.  Very dangerous if parents leave them around.  I could probably think of a few other items.  Pfffff.

Don't they tether knives to the kitchen counter in the UK now? lol, I know they tether the windows closed in certain buildings.

And this is all that is needed to prove that this cretin is nothing more than a troll.

To state that he was pleased elated with an order that resulted in the murders of innocent victims is absolutely pathetic.

Please do not feed this childish pleb.

Oh, it hurts you?? 😳

Because you types want to ban something that's significantly less harmful than other alternatives like alcohol. You never address these counter arguments because you can't without looking like a hypocrite. What's your justification for keeping Chang legal, but not marijuana?

How long have you been smoking weed?

Um moron, that's exactly what you're trying to do with me. I asked you the question first. What's your justification for keeping Chang legal and making marijuana illegal? Until you can answer that, don't reply to me.

Extracts - used to make edibles/gummies - above 0.2 % THC have ALWAYS been illegal.

Someone wasn't doing a proper enforcement job.

I'll bet most Thai homes have some illegal substance in the cupboard and legal ones like alcohol that any kid can get to, I see kids using vapes now how cool is that?

It's 0.2% of the weight. A 100gm brownie can have 200mg of thc.

If these so called sweets are for adults why are they made to look like teddy bears and packaged as if for kids?

Plus imagine what can happen in the wrong hands, and yes pedo’s I mean you.
