Vietnam's Luxury Car Fraud: Three on Trial for Deception

In an alarming case of luxury car fraud, three men are facing trial in Ho Chi Minh City for allegedly conning car owners out of their expensive vehicles. The group is accused of promising to sell these cars, then pawning them for personal gain.

Phan Cong Khanh, 31, also known as "Khanh Supper," has been charged with "fraudulent appropriation of property" by the People's Procuracy. His accomplice, Mohamach Da Pha, 29, faces similar charges, with an additional count of "abuse of trust to appropriate property."

A third individual, Huynh Xuan Van, remains at large as police continue their search for him.

Khanh and Van established K-Super Trading and Services Co., Ltd. in 2019, a company dealing in luxury cars. Khanh acted as the legal representative, while Van served as deputy director. Pha operated as a collaborator within the business.

The trouble began after Khanh and Van suffered business losses, prompting them to hatch a plan to misuse assets to settle debts. Khanh persuaded a woman named Huong to leave her valuable McLaren at his showroom, K.Supper, under the guise of selling it. Instead, in May 2023, the car was pawned for VND3 billion (approximately ฿4,500,000) to reclaim a previously pawned Mercedes G63.

Huong soon uncovered the deceit when she discovered that Khanh had pawned her car and owed money to multiple parties, prompting her to alert the authorities. Unfortunately, she was not alone in her plight.

In 2022, Khanh sold a Mercedes Brabus G800 worth VND24 billion (around ฿36,000,000) to a client in Phu Quoc. Claiming to need the car for a showroom event in June 2023, Khanh borrowed both the Brabus G800 and a McLaren from the same client. Meanwhile, Van fraudulently sold the Brabus G800, collecting VND24.5 billion (about ฿36,750,000) from another client before disappearing with the money.

Additionally, earlier in 2023, Pha illicitly pawned a BMW after claiming it was just a loan from its rightful owner, redirecting the proceeds to Van.

Pha surrendered to authorities on 8th July 2023, followed by Khanh's arrest two days later. Both have confessed to their actions, leaving the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court to soon deliberate over this high-profile deceit.

As the trial looms, the scandal underscores the dangers of maladministration in high-stakes industries, urging both individuals and businesses to exercise caution.
