Vietnam thought it had a deal on its US tariff rate. Then Trump stepped in.

Vietnam thought it had a preliminary deal with the U.S. to lower its tariff level substantially. Then, at the last minute, President Donald Trump raised the rate.

As a result, the Vietnamese government still has not formally accepted a key part of the agreement the president touted on social media last week, despite Trump’s claim in the post that the terms had been agreed to by Vietnam’s leader, Tô Lâm, according to four people familiar with the discussions and granted anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. And neither side has released documentation of those terms, raising questions about whether they did, in fact, reach an agreement, as the White House labors to prove it is making headway in its trade negotiations with dozens of major partners.

Typical leftist slant. It's a good thing President Trump did step in. The negotiators were going to let Vietnam get away with a measly 11% tariff. President Trump bumped it up to 20% and maybe even that's too generous. The Vietnamese are still truckling to China even though China is stealing its islands and its share of the sea. Good work, Mr. President!

  • A typical MAGA response when they have no idea what they are talking about, or even what the supposed details of the agreement were all about.   Is that the best that you have to offer?

  • And the most affected are people with low revenues (and no or low tax cuts) who can only afford cheap products from Asia.   Meanwhile, the wealthy ones have no problem with buying a new BMW

  • Of course. The same as he charges the secret service when they have to stay at one of his golf courses every 3 or 4 days. Seems a fair quid pro quo ☺️

I've seen some jolly funny posts on AN over the years, but this one takes the biscuit!

Not nearly as funny as your posts on the "Hunter Biden laptop is the new Pizzagate" thread. But my posts on this thread will likely not require the closure of the entire World News forum🤣

He will come with big news about Russia.. China and India on monday he said today.

Whats in the task is charging 500% tariffs on China and India if they don't stop buying oil and other things from Russia.

Will that include all countries that are buying Russian oil

Crude oil: China has bought 47% of Russia’s crude exports, followed by India (38%), the EU (6%), and Turkiye (6%).

Oil products: Turkiye, the largest buyer, has purchased 26% of Russia’s oil product exports, followed by China (13%) and Brazil (12%).

What on earth are you wittering on about?

I've been unable to find a forum by that name, I have, yes, occasionally made a passing reference to Hunter Biden's laptop - usually when taking the piss out of some of the more ludicrous conspiracy theories which feature it, and I have certainly never posted anything which required the closure of the entire World News forum.

Could you be more specific, or shall we dismiss it as the product of a late night, fevered and well lubricated imagination?

Yes, I meant the "Hunter Biden laptop is the new Pizzagate" thread to which he specifically referred.

How many deals have been done, Trumpettes?

Is there a Plan B that gets all manufacturing back to the USA and at prices affordable to the American public? Isn't that his stated purpose for the tariffs?

That's the reason why he is increasing them....to try to make it look more attractive to set up in the USA, as it is obviously not financially viable. So the tariffs charged to Americans on their goods, are they way he hopes to convince them. We won't rape ourselves if you do as we say.

Some MAGA idiots are claiming the price of corn is cheaper in the USA now. Have the noticed the price of Thurian in Thailand? When there are problems with trade, there can be a surplus of goods that now have to be sold domestically. An unintended win for the consumer, not so good when you've got no money coming in from trading.

Do you think that Trump finally understands that no one actually likes nor respects him. Not Putin, Not Xi, not Kim

Do you think that threatening foes and allies alike is a good policy?

So, the Great Trump changes his mind again; more flip-flops than Prayut.

Thus, global uncertainty increases.

The deal is made, then it is unmade.

Great friends with Musk; then Musk must go back to South Africa.

Decides to nuke Moscow; next day, maybe we should not nuke Moscow; too late Mr President, the deed has been done.

Mentally incompetent and unstable - needs to be removed.

Global confidence in Trump's USA - below zero.

What is the point of having negotiating committees if Trump simply overrules the agreement.

If I were in charge of the Vietnamese negotiation I would be inclined yo tell the USA to shove off and refuse point blank to even enter the country let alone build anything there.

You cannot negotiate with a bully as he will always come back for more. Trump just proved that point.

He can demand that US companies relocate back to the USA, but they can tie him up in the courts for years.

Not at the inflated ratesTrump charges.

Because tariffs are a 2 way thing, and if Trump imposes a 500% tariff on China and India, there is nothing stopping them imposing a 500% tariff on ALL imports from the USA.

That is close on a 2 billion people market, which is a big market to lose.

No, that requires self reflection, a treat a narcissist doesn't possess.

The hivemind don't know what to do about Trump being his own man. They are so used to loving money motivated immoral leaders just looking to feather their own and their families nest that they are dumbstruck when an honest patriot comes along and works for Americans interest.

Hilarious to see their silly reactions and venting.

"when an honest patriot comes along and works for Americans interest" 🤣

Hilarious, but not in the way you thought!

Trump is a completely unhinged man who is semi senile and largely insane, so you combine that with somebody who is hateful and vindictive and will levy tariffs on a nation because he doesn't like their policies (which has nothing to do with making America great again) and you have a recipe for worldwide disaster and one of the most dangerous men in the world at the helm of the nation with the world's largest economy. What could possibly go wrong?

Eduardo Bolsonaro said he had been pushing senior White House officials to place sanctions on the Brazilian judge overseeing his father’s prosecution.

Then, on Wednesday, Mr. Trump opted for something far more damaging: a 50 percent tariff on all Brazilian imports starting Aug. 1, retaliation for what he called a “witch hunt” against Jair Bolsonaro.

The shift from imposing sanctions on a single judge to threatening an entire nation of 200 million with harsh tariffs was Mr. Trump’s decision alone, according to two people familiar with the meeting at which the president discussed his decision and who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a private conversation.

The move showed Mr. Trump’s new willingness to use tariffs to settle political scores, regardless of questions of legality, because of their sheer power to cause economic destruction and impose intense political pressure.

Doesn’t that sound like extortion? “It’s MAGA, baby,” Steve Bannon proudly replied. “It’s a brave new world.”

Eduardo Bolsonaro, a right-wing Brazilian pundit named Paulo Figueiredo and lawyers for Rumble, a video site popular with conservatives that has been banned in Brazil, have been lobbying senior administration officials and members of Congress for months. Congress has held hearings, and White House officials have been briefing Mr. Trump, Mr. Bannon said. Mr. Trump has not needed much convincing.

It's pretty pathetic when this clown goes from trying to convince people that tariffs are going to improve the American economy, to threatening to impose a 50% tariff on a major trading partner, strictly because he doesn't like the way they treat their ex-president, who was extremely corrupt, just like himself.

It's you who once again is showing that. But, unlike you, I will not simply make an assertion, but will offer an explanation. You appealed to the fact that x number of people disagree with me. In other words, you are polling.  Not offering any reasoned arguments. Just citing the fact that there is opposition to what I write..

It was Trump who announced the deal with Vietnam, while Vietnam never confirmed it. In fact they even publicly denied there was a deal.

So who is the loser with the big mouth here.
