Hanoi police have dismantled a criminal syndicate involved in producing and selling counterfeit electric motorbikes disguised as well-known brands. This development comes with the initiation of a criminal case against three individuals connected to the operation, accused of "manufacturing and trading counterfeit goods."

Authorities divulged that the group meticulously gathered data on legitimate electric motorbike models to create imitation versions in a facility located in Bac Ninh Province, which was previously part of Bac Giang Province. These counterfeit vehicles, complete with forged documentation, were then distributed to various shops across Hanoi, masquerading as genuine.

The counterfeit operation has been running since January, with police estimating that each fake motorbike sold fetched a profit of VND3–4 million (approximately ฿4,500–฿6,000). On 16 June, a coordinated inspection was carried out by the Hanoi police alongside the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department of Domestic Market Management and Development. They targeted three motorbike dealerships implicated in these illicit activities.

The investigation led to a significant raid on a manufacturing firm in Bac Giang, where authorities seized over 100 electric motorbikes lacking legal documentation. Additionally, they confiscated machinery and equipment used in the illegal production process. The seized goods were identified as counterfeit, with an estimated value surpassing VND1 billion, roughly equivalent to ฿1.5 million.

Officials have raised alarms over the increasing complexity of the counterfeit electric motorbike market. Such operations not only deceive consumers and authorities but also facilitate tax evasion. Moreover, these substandard vehicles pose a substantial risk, being linked to potential fire and explosion hazards.

Fake products bearing renowned brand names continue to be a significant challenge. Authorities stress the importance of vigilance when purchasing motorbikes, emphasising the profound safety hazards and legal issues associated with counterfeit goods.

As the investigation progresses, the Hanoi Economic Police Division is committed to dismantling such networks and ensuring consumer safety. The crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving tactics used by counterfeiters and the ongoing need for robust regulatory oversight.
