In a bold move towards digital transformation, Hanoi is deploying hundreds of AI-powered cameras to oversee traffic and ultimately replace traffic police on the streets by 18 December. This initiative marks a significant push by local authorities to maintain public order and safety while modernising through technology.

The Hanoi police have invested heavily in digital infrastructure, creating a robust platform that prioritises data security and cybersecurity. Currently, their operations are centred around three command centres, managing more than 720 surveillance cameras city-wide. Enhancing IT skills among officers and improving network connectivity also remain key priorities.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Tung, Director of the Hanoi Department of Public Security, announced that 261 AI cameras have already been installed across the city. These advanced cameras possess features like licence plate recognition, traffic control, and flow regulation. Notably, the facial recognition capability of these cameras can automatically identify wanted individuals and alert command centres, bolstering the city's security measures.

Looking ahead, by the third quarter of 2026, the camera network is expected to expand its surveillance capabilities. It will monitor sidewalks and detect environmental violations, such as illegal dumping, ensuring offenders are held accountable. The entire system is planned to be fully operational by June 2026, aiming to maintain urban order more effectively.

The implementation of these cutting-edge technologies is set to optimise work efficiency for the Hanoi police and provide substantial benefits for the city’s residents. By embracing digital solutions, Hanoi is positioning itself at the forefront of modern urban management, promising a safer and more orderly environment for all its citizens.
