Report Buriram Police Catch Suspect in Women’s Underwear Theft

In a curious case of kleptomania, officers in Thailand’s Buriram province have apprehended a man for stealing women’s underwear, claiming he collected the garments solely as a hobby.

 

Residents of Lahan Sai district had been complaining about missing underwear over the past few weeks, prompting local police to delve into the mystery. By scrutinising CCTV footage, they identified a suspicious figure donning short jeans, a T-shirt, and a cap, cleverly using a towel to obscure his face. Their sleuthing led them to Pho Thong Temple, where the suspect had been staying.

 

Officers arrested 32-year-old Pae early yesterday, 22nd July. Originally from Udon Thani, Pae had journeyed to Buriram to work at an amusement park event being held at the temple. His primary role involved overseeing the rides and collecting admission fees.

 

A search of Pae’s temporary abode revealed a stash of 54 pilfered items—28 pairs of panties, 25 bras, and two suggestive pyjama sets. Despite the incriminating find, Pae maintained he never indulged in sniffing or any other misuse of the garments. He insisted his collection was purely for personal enjoyment, much to the scepticism of the authorities.

 

Pae confessed that he committed the thefts stealthily between 1am and 3am, under the cover of darkness, after completing his daily tasks. His usual target was a dormitory situated a mere 200 to 300 metres from the temple grounds.

 

Believing he was beyond capture, Pae planned to depart the province undetected after the festival’s conclusion. Yet, he found himself acknowledging the sharp investigative instincts of the Buriram police, who outmanoeuvred his plans.

 

Pae now faces legal repercussions, charged with theft during night-time hours. This offence, under Section 335 of Thailand’s Criminal Law, can lead to a sentence of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 baht (approximately 400,000 Thai Baht).

 

As this peculiar tale unfolds, it sheds light on an unusual aspect of human behaviour while underlining the impressive diligence of local law enforcement in maintaining community peace.
