Thailand has vigorously refuted accusations from Cambodia of plotting to assassinate its top leaders, sparking a diplomatic stir.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) categorically denied the claims that it had plotted to eliminate Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet. The assertions were reportedly made by Cambodia's Minister of Information, citing alleged foreign intelligence.

These allegations emerged while Thai and Cambodian officials were engaged in crucial talks under the General Border Committee (GBC) framework. On August 5, Nikorndej Balankura, MFA spokesperson, labelled the accusations as “completely irrational” and part of a smear campaign against Thailand.

“These claims are utterly baseless and designed to create mistrust,” she stated. The ministry voiced concern over the spread of such "fake news" amidst diplomatic efforts to enhance cooperation.

The MFA emphasised that creating such narratives during sensitive discussions could disrupt the positive progress made towards peaceful resolutions. Nikorndej urged Cambodia to pursue a path of constructive dialogue and mutual respect, warning against actions that might escalate border tensions.

Thailand remains committed to diplomacy and has insisted on preventing political manoeuvres and misinformation from impacting bilateral ties. Despite the ongoing media frenzy, Amarin TV noted that neither the Cambodian Prime Minister's Office nor Hun Sen himself had released a statement.

Historically, Thailand and Cambodia have experienced periodic tensions, often related to territorial disputes or political concerns. Nonetheless, Thai officials stress that diplomacy is the avenue forward.

“Our focus remains on strengthening cooperation through truthful engagement,” Balankura affirmed.

No way Thailand would try that (or agree to do so as a proxy with pressure coming from elsewhere). The geopolitical stakes are too high. Everyone knows China is the backer of Cambodia and Myanmar. Thailand needs to stay in good books with China.

If only. What a dream come true. The entire planet would reek just a little bit less.

Clean the leaches and they will just come back.
