Ca Mau Airport, a key hub in Vietnam's southernmost province, will shut down for a year-long upgrade starting November 2025. This ambitious VND2.4 trillion (approximately 3.3 billion Thai Baht) project aims to transform the airport into a modern facility capable of handling larger aircraft and increased passenger numbers.

Currently, Ca Mau Airport features a modest 1,500-metre runway, serving mainly smaller aircraft such as the ATR72 and Embraer E190. Built during the French colonial era, it now manages around 200,000 passengers annually, primarily on daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City.

The proposed upgrades will extend the runway, refine taxiways and aprons, and introduce new facilities to meet 4C standards. This will enable the airport to accommodate larger planes like the Airbus A320 and A321, crucially enhancing its capacity. Officials anticipate that by 2030, the airport will handle up to one million passengers annually, with projections soaring to three million by 2050.

A significant hurdle, land clearance affecting over 600 families, has been successfully completed, with compensation costs exceeding VND577 billion (around 795 million Thai Baht). This clears the path for construction to commence without delay.

The upgrade is set to invigorate tourism and business prospects in the Mekong Delta region, enhancing connectivity for travellers from across Vietnam and potentially attracting international visitors to the country's southern extremities. This development aligns with aspirations to bolster economic growth and elevate the region's profile on the global map.

The provincial People's Committee is confident that these improvements will significantly boost the local economy by facilitating easier access and attracting a diverse array of visitors and investors. Businesses and tourists alike are expected to benefit from more frequent and varied flight routes directly to Vietnam's southern tip.

In summary, the upcoming transformation of Ca Mau Airport represents a pivotal step in the region's development strategy. By adopting new technologies and expanding infrastructure, it aims to become a gateway that could transform the economic landscape of the Mekong Delta, championing growth and connectivity for decades to come.
