A 26-year-old man has died after his motorcycle crashed through a construction barrier, hitting a concrete cover and sending him plunging into a 10-metre-deep underground cable shaft filled with water on Chaeng Watthana Road, Bang a kok, in the early hours of 11 August.

Police and rescue workers from the Por Teck Tung Foundation were called to the scene, outside the Administrative Court in Thung Song Hong, Lak Si district, at around 00:30.

The road, which has five lanes, had its three leftmost lanes closed for underground electrical cable works. A cream-coloured Honda Scoopy motorcycle, registered in Bangkok, was found overturned with front-end damage after finally colliding with a power generator near the shaft opening.

Rescue teams lowered themself into the shaft and recovered the rider’s body. He was identified as Mr Santisuk. He had suffered a fractured skull.

A construction worker at the site said the road section had been closed nightly from 20:00 to 03:00, for the past two weeks, with warning lights in place. The concrete road cover had been removed to allow workers to drill into the underground wall for cable installation.

“While we were working, the motorbike suddenly sped past the barrier and slammed into the concrete cover, throwing the rider into the shaft,” the worker said.

Police questioned the site’s supervising engineer to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The victim’s body has been sent to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for autopsy before being released to his family.

Yup, motorcyclist don't care about barriers, traffic cones, flashing lights, they even drive against the flow of traffic.... "rules are for thee, not me"

But hey, he got his Darwin Award 🏆 👏
