In a striking breach of local traffic regulations, ten drivers from a vintage Vespa tour group in Ho Chi Minh City have been fined a total of approximately 72,000 Thai Baht (VND50 million). The penalisation arose after these drivers were caught running a red light whilst transporting tourists through the bustling city centre.

The incident unfolded on Monday morning when the group, featuring over 20 classic Vespas each carrying a foreign visitor, was travelling along the vibrant Le Loi Street. As they neared the intersection of Nguyen Hue and Le Loi, the traffic light shifted from yellow to red. Ignoring the signal, ten of the riders continued, executing a right turn onto Le Thanh Ton Street without halting.

Adding to the severity, some drivers deftly weaved through stationary vehicles and narrowly missed a pedestrian.

Notably, this particular junction lacks a green arrow signal that would enable right turns during a red light, highlighting the drivers' clear violation.

Local traffic police from Ben Thanh Ward responded swiftly, issuing fines to the errant drivers. All involved Vespas were taken to a nearby police station for formal processing.

The tour is operated by a company that prides itself on providing unique city sightseeing experiences through these nostalgic scooters, a hit with international tourists. However, this recent event casts a shadow on their operations, raising concerns about safety and adherence to traffic laws.

Company representatives have vowed to collaborate with authorities to prevent future occurrences. They assure that steps will be taken to prioritise passenger safety, underscoring their commitment to both local regulations and their clients’ wellbeing.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict adherence to traffic rules, especially in vibrant cities like Ho Chi Minh, where roadways are shared by locals and tourists alike. By focusing on safety and compliance, tour operators can ensure enjoyable and risk-free experiences for visitors, maintaining the allure of their unique services.
