CharlieH Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Donald Trump has lauded European leaders as "great people who want to see a deal done" ahead of a critical meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his European allies. This virtual meeting, organized by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, takes place in Berlin as part of efforts to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This diplomatic engagement is a precursor to Trump’s forthcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. The summit aims to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. Major political figures, including Sir Keir Starmer, are expected to partake in these discussions, highlighting their significance on the global stage. European leaders have voiced concerns that a lenient ceasefire deal on Ukraine might embolden Russia to expand its territory further into Europe. Russia’s foreign ministry, however, has maintained its stance since June 2024, demanding a complete Ukrainian withdrawal from four regions that Russia claims but does not fully control. President Zelensky has firmly opposed any requirement for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from key areas such as the Donbas region, emphasizing that these territories are crucial to Ukraine's sovereignty and security. He warned that any concession might allow Russian forces to use the area as a launching point for future aggression. This meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska could potentially shape European and global security for decades. Trump's approach appears to be part of a broader strategy for achieving a Nobel Peace Prize by utilizing his renowned "art of the deal" tactics to resolve the conflict. However, there are apprehensions that Putin's objectives may focus on territorial expansion rather than peace. World affairs experts note the juxtaposition between Trump’s strategy and Putin’s potential ambitions. Sam Kiley, a world affairs editor, suggests that while Trump seeks a diplomatic resolution, Putin may be strategizing for a "massive grab" of Ukrainian land, viewing the situation as an opportunity rather than a conflict to resolve. Despite these uncertainties, Trump expressed optimism about working with European leaders to facilitate a constructive dialogue. He reiterated this on Truth Social, remarking that these leaders are eager to "see a deal done." As preparations for the summit intensify, international attention is focused on Anchorage, where the outcome could determine the future of the conflict and influence geopolitical dynamics. With both opportunities and risks on the horizon, stakeholders are hopeful for progress toward peace but remain cautious about potential setbacks. The discussions are expected to address not just military de-escalation but also comprehensive plans for long-term stability and economic recovery in Ukraine. This summit, therefore, represents a critical juncture that may redefine alliances and influence the geopolitical landscape for years to come. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Independent 2025-08-13
SingAPorn Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago This war needs to stop. No matter what the corrupt regimes of the USA, Ukraine or Russia fuss over, as neither of the 3 countries is a clean angel. But innocent people are getting killed on both sides and it's about time we Stop fueling Ukraine with trillions of dollars in cash or weapons that often are ending up unaccounted. What is more unacceptable is to most western countries showering Ukraine with billions of dollars while their streets in the west are filled with homeless locals with no access to decent state funded social healthcare. 3 2 5

Popular Post spidermike007 Posted 2 hours ago Popular Post Posted 2 hours ago Now that he needs their help and support he calls them great leaders, when just a month or two ago he was insulting them, belittling them, and being just as nasty as he could possibly be, to some of our closest allies. Virtually anything Trump says at this point should be dismissed, as the man has pretty much disqualified himself from being a reliable leader. 1 1 2 1

Paul Henry Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago As TACO keeps refering to Alaska as Russia maybe this is the real estate tycoons land swap he is suggesting. He thinks Russia should take back Alaska for vacating a couple of invaded Ukraine regions. The real estate genius at work again.
Popular Post Paul Henry Posted 1 hour ago Popular Post Posted 1 hour ago Singaporn. SO its OK for Russia to spend billions while their people (especially rural and non Moscowites) suffer and battle to exsist and don't forget all the Russian families that have lost sons, father and husbands. Russia is the aggressor and will continue to invade other European countries unless stopped now. That is why Ukraine is being funded by European and other countries to defend itself they are not the agressor. 1 1 1

Your first paragraph shows that your agenda is causing you to have very flawed reading comprehension issues. No where did @SingAPorn say any thing of the sort. And the second (domino effect) paragraph is flawed as well. No chances Putin will try to invade another Eastern Europeon country after this disasterous war. And you sure have plenty of company in flawed thinking around here. What else is new
