Trump’s Aid Cuts Leave Myanmar Civilians Defenceless

Sweeping foreign aid cuts under Donald Trump’s second term have triggered a humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, emboldening the military junta and crippling support for millions caught in the country’s civil war, rights groups warned this week.

According to a joint report by the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) and Fortify Rights, the abrupt freeze on USAID funding—part of a broader $60 billion rollback—has stripped Myanmar of over $1 billion in projected aid by 2029. The cuts have led to the termination of thousands of development projects, leaving civilians exposed to violence, displacement, and starvation.

Sam Mason, CEO of HART, said the policy “weakened local mechanisms for oversight and justice,” giving the military “carte blanche to violate human rights.” Benedict Rogers of Fortify Rights added that the funding squeeze has “put thousands of lives in grave danger,” silencing pro-democracy voices and dismantling vital services in conflict zones like Shan State.

The report details harrowing abuses, including child soldier recruitment, sexual violence, and the collapse of refugee support along the Thai border. Aid workers say food rations have stopped, medical care has vanished, and families are resorting to begging and debt to survive.

Lord Alton of Liverpool condemned the cuts, stating, “The more we remove deterrents to violence, the more we embolden the perpetrators. It strengthens tyranny and intensifies suffering.”

With 3.5 million people displaced and the junta accused of war crimes, rights groups are urging the international community to intervene. As Myanmar’s fragile democracy crumbles, the cost of silence grows ever more deadly.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Lord Alton of Liverpool condemned the cuts ...

... feel free to replace the aid with GBP, or <deleted> :coffee1:

... "US aid to Myanmar had been increasing, with a peak in spending of over $4 billion in 2020. This aid included both humanitarian assistance and development initiatives.

In 2024, the U.S. disbursed around $237 million in foreign aid to Myanmar" ...

... "In the financial year 2024-2025, the UK significantly increased its bilateral Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) to Myanmar, allocating £66.45 million, up from an initial £44 million.

In comparison, the 2023-2024 financial year saw support starting at £30.1 million and reaching £38.83 million" ...

Trump would rather support the genocide against the Palestinian people, than help some who are starving. We all have priorities. His are grossly misplaced. His withdrawal of aid to the poorest of the poor, was a very unfortunate and heartless decision.

Given the level of corruption in Myanmar it's debatable how much of that aid money ever was spent for the benefit of the people! A lot of very rich Generals there.

The US has consistently given more than it's share of foreign aid, often to countries that hate them. Maybe time for someone else to pick up the baton.

Wait, what?

That leaves 210 OTHER countries to contribute. Step up ladies. Where were you? Where are you now?

Why would that be an either/ or decision?

How would you know what Trump would do especially in light of the fact everything you post here is patently false.

You have no credibility your bias runs so deep. Even over JT you suffer from

The Syndrome ®©™

Maybe you could get disability for that or something??

I can only hope that he continues to plow through anything and everything and then Vance and then ?? as well.

Wow really?

As I see it. The billion the US sent did little to nothing to stop human rights violations there.

In January a report was made by the UN saying violations increased and became worse as for the atrocities. So perhaps that money never made it to those it was designed to aid.

Either way, It is not the US alone to be responsible to help stop those atrocities. And since the money did not do anything. Perhaps there is another way.

January 6th 2025: There are credible reports of human rights violations and abuses and international humanitarian law violations committed against civilians. These include: abduction and forced recruitment of children and members of ethnic and religious minorities; the Myanmar military’s indiscriminate aerial bombardments that kill and injure civilians and damage civilian infrastructure; sexual and gender-based violence; the burning of homes; attacks on humanitarian workers and facilities; and restrictions on humanitarian access by the military regime and various armed groups. We have also seen disturbing reports of dismemberment and burning of civilians.

The intensification of the conflict in Rakhine State and the suffering experienced by all communities there, including Rohingya, is deeply concerning. The reports of violations of international law targeting Rohingya, in addition to the military’s history of stoking intercommunal tensions in Rakhine State and elsewhere across the country, underscore the grave dangers to civilians.
