Never used an air fryer before.

Just did a quick search on Lazada and they're cheap ... some are 450 Baht. Are they any good?

Anyone cook with these things?

What do you cook in them? Do they replace conventional ovens?

Is any cooking oil required?

What's the physics of these things? Like HOW do they work?

Recommended?

Great for a single person who doesn't want to use oil for frying. Simple to use, a bit messy to clean up, but very convenient.
A little small if you have a large family.

Terrible if you feel the taste of good oil is important when frying, or following a Keto lifestyle.

Terrible for Keto because there's no fats required for cooking?

I get fats from dairy ... sometimes eat a small chunk of butter raw straight up. So no need to cook in fats?

It's basically just high heat confined in a small area.

If you have a good oven I don't see the point.

Most of them have been found to emit harmful gases due to cheap materials.

Low fat and low protein is good for losing weight, only if doing keto people swig oil down

Air fryers are fantastic, I recently discovered them, the texture of the food comes out completely different than an oven, when you cook fish with an air fryer it comes out nice and crispy, sliced potatoes turn out brilliant. I do all kinds of slice vegetables like carrots drizzled with olive oil with a little bit of herbs and some sea salt, absolutely delicious. My guess is that if you're using a high quality oil like olive oil that it remains unsaturated after cooking, so it's likely quite healthy.

I bought a good one made by Sharp, it has a 8 liter tray which I love, and I think it was close to 3,000 baht and worth every single baht. Don't buy a cheap one, that pretty much applies with all appliances and kitchen gadgets.

I have an older model with a big metal base with the power unit sitting on top. I line the base with alfoil and all the mess goes there. Easier to clean. I love them.

Not messy at all.

Just line the basket with aluminium foil, and spray with olive oil or canola. Discard the foil after use.

I fry fish, pork, chicken, ham steaks and beef with mine. Right now, it's cooking a hamburger patty.

I check with a meat thermometer, everything is cooked at more than 70 C.

It's probably more correct to call it a roaster instead of a fryer.

ideal for small condo kitchens.

Posting BS as usual.

Despite their name, air fryers are essentially mini benchtop convection ovens.

Recently, there have been growing rumblings about nasties lurking in our precious air fryers and purportedly causing serious health issues amongst its unsuspecting users.

In a previous blog, we did a deep dive into the dangers of PFAS in non-stick cookware. PFAS are a group of toxic compounds nicknamed “The Forever Chemicals” for their incredibly slow degradation rate. This means that they can linger in the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years.

PFAS chemicals have been linked to a staggeringly long list of health issues5.

The physics is basically convection and radiation heat transfer to food placed inside the fryer. Also, some conduction, but mostly convection and radiation.

PFAS are used in fire-fighting foams. They are water soluble sulphonates.

Non-stick cookware is made out of polytetrafluoroethylene, otherwise known as PTFE or Teflon. Totally insoluble in water.

FFS, learn some basic chemistry before posting arrant nonsense on ASEAN.

Air Fryers Are Toxic and Can Cause Cancer, Says Expert; Here's How

According to experts, using air fryers with a non-stick coating can release highly toxic fumes and chemicals that make your food carcinogenic, causing cancer. It can also lead to a high probability of Teflon flu, leading to bronchial health issues.

Some air fryers have non-stick coatings that may contain PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) or PTFE. At high temperatures, these chemicals can degrade and release toxic fumes.

PTFE degrades slowly at 260 C.

Most air fryers are controlled to 200 C.

My Keto macros are 80% fat, 15% protein, and 5% carbs.
A 'little' lump of butter won't work for me. I need lots more.

“Air fryers are mostly coated with this non-stick coating that releases toxic fumes when it is heated up. It also has these wire coatings in it—these release heavy metals into your food and then lead to heavy metal toxicity, which can impact your liver and kidney in the long run,”

It can lead to something called Teflon flu, a flu-like condition that is very common. It also causes bronchial health issues because of toxic fumes being released,” she added.

I've been using an air fryer for several years.

I can swim a 30 m pool underwater without drawing a breath.

Any "expert" with a name like Dr. Dimple Jangda has my BS meter off scale.

I know right, made by some Chinese plastics expert, doesn't bear thinking about. The question is if you're going to kill yourself, why do it by slowly gassing yourself to death with the toxic fumes of this dimunitive oven? Why not buy a sharp knife and do it like a man? So cowardly.

People who believe influencers on social media are gullible and stupid.

There was a tv documentary some years ago into the Teflon issue and after the investigation by government,  Teflon was banned.   It was supposedly  replaced with a different coating on cooking utensils,  that was/ is not hazardous to health.   PFOA and PTFE has been banned in the manufacture of non stick  coating for cooking utensils.

However there are so many qualified " health experts" on the web, who seem to have different opinions on this.

Well, it's understandable that you're a racist since you're a 100 years old, just for you, you're going to love this expert:

The Australian Government PFAS Taskforce has reported potential associations with certain cancers.

Dr Desai said she would avoid using air fryers for health reasons

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of synthetic organofluorine chemical compounds that have multiple fluorine atoms attached to an alkyl chain; there are 7 million known such chemicals according to PubChem. PFAS came into use with the invention of Teflon in 1938 to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. They are now used in products including waterproof fabric such as nylon, yoga pants, carpets, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, mobile phone screens, wall paint, furniture, adhesives, food packaging, firefighting foam, and the insulation of electrical wire.

Teflon is not banned. One of its precursor chemicals, PFAO, is. Teflon is now made with different precursors.

Teflon is perfectly safe when operated at 200 C, which is what the majority of air fryers are governed to.
