A newborn baby girl has been found abandoned in a forested area next to a rubber plantation in Amnat Charoen Province, with her body covered in ant bites. Villagers rushed the infant to hospital after hearing her cries.

The discovery was made on the morning of 22 August, near Ban Thawi Phon in Na Wa Subdistrict, Pathum Ratchawongsa District. Local residents alerted the Phetkasem Amnat Charoen Foundation after spotting a suspicious bag in the undergrowth.

Rescue workers arriving at the scene found the baby wrapped in a towel and placed inside a white mesh shoulder bag, left in a thicket at the edge of the plantation. The infant, in apparent good health, was crying loudly but had sustained numerous insect bites. Fearing for her safety, rescuers immediately took her to Pathum Ratchawongsa Hospital.

One of the locals, Mr Tawee Uttha, said he had been applying fertiliser in his rubber plantation when he first heard what he thought was the sound of a snake attacking a frog. Following the noise, he discovered the bag but did not immediately realise a baby was inside. “At first I thought it was a snake, but when I used a stick to move the bag, the baby started crying. I was shocked and called others to help,” he said.

The village headman confirmed he was preparing to attend a funeral when residents reported the discovery. On arriving at the site, he found the baby girl with multiple insect bites and immediately arranged for her transfer to hospital.

Police from Pathum Ratchawongsa Station, led by Pol Sub Lt Sri-amnat Chomkaew, visited the hospital and the location where the baby was found. Officers said investigations are underway to trace the parents, but no further details could yet be released.

Authorities have pledged to pursue the case and ensure the child receives appropriate care and protection.
