The Meteorological Department has issued a warning as a tropical depression over the upper South China Sea is expected to bring heavy rainfall across the country from 24 to 27 August.

As of 22 August, the system was centred at latitude 17.5°N, longitude 119.0°E, with maximum sustained winds of approximately 55 km/h. The storm is moving west-northwest at around 30 km/h and is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm before making landfall in northern Vietnam and Laos between 25 and 26 August.

The storm, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, is forecast to increase rainfall across many regions, including the upper northeast, north, central, east, and western coast of the south, as well as Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Strong winds are also expected in these areas.

Authorities warned residents to remain vigilant against flash flooding and landslides, particularly in foothill areas, near waterways and in low-lying zones.

At sea, conditions in the upper Andaman are set to deteriorate, with waves expected to reach 2–3 metres and even higher in areas of thunderstorms. Small boats are advised to remain in port, while larger vessels should exercise caution.

The Meteorological Department urged the public to closely follow updates via its official website (www.tmd.go.th).
