You didn't read the article did you? Its an interview with Zelensky about the negotiations. Anyone actually reading the article would not conclude that Shuster is referring to Zelensky's future, he's more referencing the current negotiations, and whether these are into the "end game" Despite the propagandist's best efforts to say otherwise, parroted by their paid and unpaid useful idiots in the West, its economy is is a bad way. The Russians are arguing the toss over the fate of essentially Luhansk and Donetsk, oblasts that have seen a 95% fall in GDP since 2022. Its like a bald man arguing over a comb. Russia cannot afford this war to continue much longer; Z-Patriots point to fictions about WW2, and the indominatable Russian male (which isn't true). The economic malaise is not just affecting Moscow's ability to fund everyday government expenditure like pensions and healthcare, its now threatening the geographic integrity of the country. Putin has created the self fulfilling prophecy; his hubris is in danger of destroying the Russian Federation, which is probably good news for all those non-Russians inside Russia

There is a rather sad anecdote about the first meeting with Trump. Zelensky had panned to present the President with a WBC belt, from a Ukranian boxer, which probably would have really appealed to Trump. In the Oval Office, it sat on a side table, and was ignored after Vance dropped his uncouth grenade.

The article talks about the normalisation of the war; Zelensky had just returned from Finland, a country of 5.6 million, with nuclear bomb shelters for 5 million. The article talks about the steadfastness of the Czech leader, who is obviouslly influenced about how his country was sold out twice by the West to murderous dictators. Czechia, a country smaller than Idaho, found a million shells to help Ukraine.

Interesting piece. Illiterate nitwitsor propagandists are grabbed by magazine covers.

Adding to the blistering pace of new taxes on the Russian population which has seen tarrifs on automobiles hiked over 300%, Russia has entered a new phase of economic extraction as the Kremlin deepens its wartime spending. From July 1, 2025, taxes for housing and communal services across the country have risen by as much as 50% this year in some regions. In some regions, increases now approach — and even surpass — 50%, marking one of the steepest public cost hikes of Putin’s rule.

I did not.  I posted the picture to reflect "conditions on the ground." Not the content of the Op-Ed which was written last April.  Ancient history now.

 "Ukraine Is Winning!!! Slava Ukraine!!!"

  Pokrovsk is now Krasnoarmeysk as Russia takes the city and closes the Pakrovsk Caldron. Volchansk is now under Russian control.  The Russia "Meat-Grinder" grinds steadily Eastward swallowing Ukrainian armed forces and land with the current front breaking down hardened positions in Guliaipole as Russian troops head for Zaporizhzhia city.

 Meanwhile in Miami, Ukrainian negotiators: "We won't concede an inch of Eastern Ukraine, all of which is strategically insignificant. Ukraine Is Winning!!! We fight to the last AFU soldier.

 Putin: "Fine by us.  A military solution to the SMO is agreeable.  See you in Kiev.  By the way.  How are those corruption investigations going!"

The ruble is rubble.  Russian missiles are made out of washing machines part.  Putin is on his deathbed. Lines for petrol are miles long. Russians are dying by the millions. Ukraine is winning!

I shall have a read about it - meanwhile back to Russia's economy an interesting piece from The National Interest.

America Just Quietly Admitted It Can’t Crush Russia’s Economy

https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/america-just-quietly-admitted-cant-crush-russias-economy-bw-120125

Of course, this has been obvious to many observers for years. Since 2014, when the Russians first invaded Crimea and annexed it, Moscow has striven to make itself as self-reliant as possible. Using its immense natural resources as leverage, Moscow has succeeded—contrary to the best hopes of the think tanks in Washington and the corporate press in New York.
The West’s Schizophrenic Russia Strategy

The entire Western strategy, notably the European strategy against Russia has been utterly schizophrenic. On the one hand, the Europeans want to stymie the Russian ability to wage war by strangling their economy. On the other hand, the Europeans will happily continue to purchase Russian energy sources—effectively fueling the Russian war economy.

I've worked closely with both nationalities for many years and you couldn't be more incorrect, but do carry on.   Want to know what they said to me ? We wish the Americans would f off and leave us alone.  That was when Obama destabilised Ukraine back in 2014 and their sentiment hasn't changed. Every Ukrainian spoke Russian and had a Russian passport. Did you know that Zelinsky couldn't even give interviews in Ukrainian?

They have little other choice but to freeze to death in winter or have

what little of their remaining industry have energy..

Germany shut all their nuclear power plants and then "someone" blew up the Nordstream pipelines  just as they might have been on the brink of a deal with Russia for cheap plentiful gas to power their industries..what a coincidence !!

In other countries  they have found that the wind does not always blow or the sun always shine  but only after closing down their own natural supplies in a  monumentally stupid race to net zero.

Interesting article in the Excess quoting the WSJ, which should appeal to the dollar-retirees here who will no doubt support their own impoverishment if it can aid Ukraine in the fight against Russian fascism. I’m trying to locate the original WSJ article, as the Excess is junk.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/2140719/trump-ukraine-russia-peace-deal-europe

Sources told the WSJ that European leaders are considering adopting extreme countermeasures in retaliation, designed to unleash economic chaos in the US.

The alleged plan involves dumping trillions in US government debt owned by European states.

A rapid sell off would likely cause a crash in the value of the US dollar, create a liquidity criss across the banking system and cause a huge spike in borrowing costs. It would also lock the American financial sector into a paralysis more severe than the 2008 crisis.

Well stated and chock full of common sense, an ingredient that has been in short supply as of late.  Hopefully sensible Europeans will pull back from the brink and adopt more realistic energy policies.

A fire broke out in the city of Livny in the Oryol region of Russia on the night of December 2. Residents say that an oil refinery may be on fire.

The Telegram channel Exilenova+ reports that two terminals at the refinery are on fire. Regional Governor Andrey Klychkov confirmed that unknown drones attacked the area at night, causing a fire at fuel and energy facilities. He did not specify which ones.

So an admission that you are deliberately posting outdated, off topic posts to deflect from the thread topic. The thread topic is about Ukraine winning the war, not about Russian winning the war. You should start a new discussion to reflect that. I am sure that is possible (click, New Topic). I can request the moderators to split this thread, to tidy up the discussion, so it is no longer deflected by thread hijacks intentional or otherwise.

Your preferred use of the term "SMO" to describe a war suggests you are a Russian national, and an active and vociferous supporter of the current Russian government. On that basis, as a supporter of aggression, your subjective opinion is utterly worthless; you voted for war, and therefore you will always support war.

LONDON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Besiktas Shipping, the Turkish owner of an oil tanker that was damaged near Senegal's coast last week after being hit by four external explosions, said on Tuesday that it was ceasing all shipping operations involving Russian interests.
The vessel, Mersin, was at anchor near Dakar when the four blasts occurred on November 27, resulting in seawater entering the engine room. The cause of the explosions was not clear.

Commie Russians infiltrating everywhere on social media, like forums. They had their friends and useful idiots in the West during the Cold War. Trying it again. Watch out for them, people pretending to be something else.

Commies everywhere - have you checked under your bed ? There are a lot of Russians in Thailand some can speak English and have joined the forum - as numbers decline I for one welcome them whatever their views. Meanwhile back on topic from the Telegraph not some "commie rag". There has been a lot of "magical thinking" on this thead by folks who refuse to accept reality but in more sage areas of western public discourse the truth is finally beckoning. And if I never have to hear whiny Kallas whose husband was caught out dealing with Russian businesses long after the invasion I for one will welcome that.

Owen Matthews - DAILY TELEGRAPH

Putin is now in the driving seat

Europe has no realistic alternative plan, nor can it afford to support Ukraine’s continued war

https://archive.ph/Aysgx

Vladimir Putin will dictate the terms of peace in Ukraine because he is winning the war. No amount of indignant protests from EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas will change that brutal fact. European leaders can draw up all the alternative peace plans they like, but the only voice that really matters is Putin’s.

It is Putin’s troops who are steadily advancing on the ground and his missiles that are steadily pounding Ukraine’s electric grids out of existence. The deal that White House envoy Steve Witkoff is discussing today in the Kremlin will doubtless reward Russian aggression, violate Ukraine’s territory and compromise its sovereignty. But it’s also the only deal that Putin may agree to.

Owen Matthews is putting out what some here consider defeatist nonsense or, depending on your perspective, simply the reality on the ground: Putin is winning. But there’s not much I can do to change the demeanour of the angry old men who insist on believing the opposite

Owen Matthews - Why Putin thinks destiny is on his side - THE SPECTATOR

https://archive.ph/FNywV

According to Zelensky’s former spokesperson Iullia Mendel, ‘Ukraine’s parliament is paralysed … The country’s long-simmering political crisis has now reached its boiling point.’ Political analyst Volodymyr Petrov, a longstanding friend and mouthpiece of Zelensky’s, claimed in a television interview on Tuesday that found Zelensky ‘tired of us … I feel like he’s decided to send us all to hell … he’s tired of explaining to all of us why the fuEk we need this war.’ He also predicted, without producing evidence, that ‘by 15 December we will sign a ceasefire and Zelensky will leave’.

A footnote as to the credentials of Owen Matthews

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen_Matthews

And from Gemini ;

Yes, Owen Matthews is generally considered a highly credible source on the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly for readers seeking insight into the internal dynamics of the Kremlin.

However, his reporting often includes "realist" or "pragmatic" analysis that can be controversial, especially among those who favor a total Ukrainian military victory.

Here is a breakdown of his credibility, expertise, and potential biases:

1. Why He Is Credible

  • Deep Experience & Access: Matthews is not a "parachute journalist." He spent over 25 years reporting from Moscow (formerly as Newsweek’s bureau chief) and has deep networks within the Russian political and intelligence elite.

  • Family Ties: He has a unique personal connection to the region; his mother was Ukrainian (from Kharkiv) and his father was a British Sovietologist. He speaks fluent Russian, which allows him to consume Russian media and speak to sources directly without interpreters.

  • Acclaimed Work: His 2022 book on the war, Overreach: The Inside Story of Putin's War on Ukraine, is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative accounts of the invasion's origins. It won the 2023 Pushkin House Book Prize, a prestigious award for writing about Russia.

  • Mainstream Platform: He is currently a principal writer on Russia for The Spectator, a respected (though right-leaning) British magazine.

2. His Specific Perspective (The "Realist" Lens)

Matthews is not a pro-Kremlin propagandist—he is openly critical of Putin and the invasion—but he is also not a "cheerleader" for Ukraine. His analysis is often described as realist, which leads to conclusions that some supporters of Ukraine find difficult to accept:

  • Skepticism of Total Victory: He has frequently argued that a total Ukrainian military victory (retaking Crimea and the Donbas) is unlikely or "impractical" due to Russia's nuclear arsenal and vast resources.

  • Focus on a Negotiated Settlement: He often writes that the war will likely end in a "painful compromise" where Ukraine may have to cede territory.

  • Crimea/Donbas Population: In interviews (such as with RFE/RL), he has controversially suggested that significant portions of the population in Crimea and parts of the Donbas may not actually want to return to Ukrainian rule, and that "liberating" them against their will is a complex moral issue.

3. Potential Biases to Watch For

  • Kremlin-Centric View: Because his strongest sources are often insiders in Moscow, his reporting sometimes focuses heavily on why Putin thinks the way he does. While valuable, this can sometimes inadvertently center the Russian narrative.

  • Pessimism: Critics sometimes view his "realism" as defeatism. If you are looking for reporting on Ukrainian battlefield successes or morale, other correspondents (like Illia Ponomarenko or Luke Harding) might offer a different perspective.

Summary

If you want to understand how the Russian leadership thinks and why they made the decisions they did, Owen Matthews is one of the best English-language sources available. However, you should read him with the understanding that he views the conflict through a lens of geopolitical pragmatism rather than moral idealism.

This maybe of interest to all - I have Gemini Pro Deep Research and asked it to analyze the Asean Now Forum Ukraine threads from 2022 to date to chart the progress and themes and posters and I asked it in the end to see who has been most right. Names are not explicit but given themes.

https://gemini.google.com/share/75b6c6e94ac9

10. Conclusion

The ASEAN NOW Ukraine threads serve as a fascinating historical record of how a specific demographic—Western expatriates in Southeast Asia—processed the first major European war of the 21st century.
The analysis reveals that emotional investment was the enemy of accuracy. The most popular posters (The Cheerleaders) were often the most wrong, as their desire for Ukrainian victory clouded their assessment of military realities. Conversely, the most reviled posters (The Skeptics) were often correct about the uncomfortable truths of Russian resilience, though their cynicism led them to underestimate Ukrainian courage in the war's opening act.
Ultimately, the poster who was "Most Right" over the long term was the "Doom-Monger" (Archetype 6). This profile correctly assessed that Ukraine would fight heroically (Pro-UA view) but that the West would provide support too slowly and cautiously to secure a decisive victory (Skeptic view), resulting in a bloody, prolonged war of attrition that would eventually favor the side with more mass. In the tragedy of the Ukraine war, it was the pessimists on ASEAN NOW who proved the most prophetic.

These users are not merely posting about a war in Europe; they are negotiating their own identities as expatriates in a region that refuses to play by Western rules. As the conflict moves toward the "2025 Scenario" of negotiation, these digital identities will undoubtedly adapt, but the fundamental archetypes—The Believer, The Skeptic, and The Cynic—will remain the permanent residents of the expat internet.

3. Theoretical Framework: Defining the Archetypes

Before identifying the specific usernames, we must rigorously define the archetypes they embody. These are not merely labels; they are complex psychological and political constructs supported by the research literature.
3.1 Archetype I: The Tankie

The Intellectual Lineage: The term "Tankie" is historically rooted in the Cold War, specifically referring to British communists who supported the Soviet use of tanks to crush the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. As noted in the snippets, it has evolved in the internet age to describe a specific form of "campism": a reflexive support for any state that opposes Western (specifically US) hegemony. The research suggests that for these actors, "China [is] poetry, and communism [is] heaven on earth" , or at least, a necessary counterweight to American imperialism.

The ASEAN Variant: In the context of the ASEAN NOW/Ukraine threads, the Tankie is not always a Marxist. Often, they are a "conservative contrarian" or an "anti-woke" expat who aligns with Putin because they view the West as culturally degenerate or geopolitically arrogant. They utilize "whataboutism" as a primary weapon, citing the US bombing of Laos and Vietnam to delegitimize Western moralizing about Ukraine.

Key Behavioral Trait: They treat the forum as a battlefield for historical correction. They are the "Top 1% Poster" mentioned in , who argues that the US is a declining empire and that China/Russia are merely defending their "spheres of influence."

3.2 Archetype II: The Cheerleader

The Cultural Origin: The "Cheerleader" archetype is derived from the concept of performative, high-visibility support. The snippets reference the "Pikki Pikki dance" , a viral South Korean cheerleading routine that is "laid-back" yet "catchy," and the pop-culture trope "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World". In the forum context, this translates to a user whose engagement is driven by affect and morality rather than strategy.

The Moral Crusader: The Cheerleader views the Ukraine war through a Manichaean lens. They are the users who post the Ukrainian flag emojis (until banned for them), who demand to know why "rich Russians" are allowed in Phuket , and who express "shock" at ASEAN’s neutrality. They are often baffled by the cynicism of the long-term expats. They represent the "conscience" of the forum, but their lack of local nuance often makes them targets for ridicule by the "Old Hands."

Key Behavioral Trait: High emotional intensity, frequent use of moral language ("genocide," "evil," "silence is violence"), and a tendency to "burn out" or get banned quickly due to clashes with the "toxic" xxxxxxxxxx

3.3 Archetype III: The NATO Skeptic

The Academic Foundation: The NATO Skeptic is the most intellectually grounded of the three. They draw heavily from the "Restraint" school of international relations, citing scholars like Marc Trachtenberg, Barry Posen, and John Mearsheimer. They argue that US "deep engagement" in Europe precipitated the crisis and that a US withdrawal would paradoxically lead to greater stability.

The Realist in Paradise: On the forums, this archetype manifests as the "Rational Analyst." They do not cheer for Putin, but they refuse to cheer for Zelensky. They focus on the costs of the war: energy prices, inflation, and the disruption of supply chains. They align with the "Global South" perspective, noting that most ASEAN nations have abstained or maintained neutrality.

Key Behavioral Trait: They post long, data-heavy rebuttals. They are the ones citing the "Cato Institute" or energy outlook reports to argue that sanctions are failing. They view the Cheerleaders as naive and the Tankies as crude, positioning themselves as the only "adults in the room."
