BANGKOK - Chuwit Kamolvisit, the former MP renowned for his fiery speeches, is facing jail after a Bangkok court found him guilty of defamation.

On Wednesday, August 27, the South Criminal Court sentenced Chuwit to a 12-month prison term, which was later reduced to eight months, for defaming Santhana Prayoonrat, a former deputy superintendent of the Special Branch.

This verdict follows a heated YouTube stream from November 23, where Chuwit accused Santhana of being complicit in illegal gambling and obstructing police efforts.

Prosecutors claimed that Chuwit’s accusations were intentionally crafted to damage Santhana’s reputation and incite public outrage. Originally, the court imposed a nine-month sentence, but due to Chuwit’s previous conviction for false asset declarations, it was increased to 12 months. However, his cooperation during the trial led to a reduction in the sentence.

Despite the ruling, Chuwit’s legal team quickly sought bail during the appeal, offering collateral to the court. The request was approved, permitting him to remain at liberty while his legal team challenges the decision.

Court officials have warned that Chuwit will be imprisoned if his appeal does not succeed. With a reputation for headline-grabbing drama, this case adds to Chuwit’s tumultuous political legacy.

For now, he remains out on bail, awaiting the appeal’s decision. The outcome will determine whether his latest brush with the law ends behind bars or not.

Well, he does have a big unfiltered mouth so it’s not really surprising. Plus with everything else going on they can’t afford to lose what little credibility they might have left with some.

Well, according to this post from a few years ago, he should be dead...so I expect he is still choosing joy...

The fear of Chuwit seems to be enormous among the Thai political elite...

I thought Chuwit had cancer? Good for him if he made a complete recovery.

Meanwhile, in another article, police raided a well-known casino that everyone knew about but could do nothing.

I hope he has to do the time and finally croaks in there!

I think it's been reported before that he had liver cancer treatment in the UK, followed by a liver transplant.
