A 20-year-old woman is appealing for higher compensation after complications over retained surgical gauze following childbirth, which left her with a chronic vaginal infection and significant personal and financial hardship.

The case was brought to the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Complaints Centre on 28 August, by the woman, identified only as Ms. Parichat, accompanied by her lawyer, Mr. Kittichai Sattrach. She had initially been awarded 90,000 baht by the provincial public health office, but is now seeking 500,000 baht in compensation for medical expenses, loss of income and ongoing physical and emotional suffering.

According to Mr. Sattrach, Ms. Parichat delivered her child at a state hospital in Sakon Nakhon on 28 May 2025. On 17 June, she experienced severe abdominal pain at home and discovered a piece of surgical gauze protruding from her cervix. She was taken to a nearby hospital where the gauze was removed and she was treated for ten days before being discharged.

Despite multiple follow-up visits to both the original hospital and another nearby facility, Ms. Parichat continued to suffer abdominal pain and was eventually diagnosed with a chronic vaginal infection on 7 August.

The lawyer explained that the retained gauze has caused prolonged discomfort, prevented her from working and disrupted her family life. She has been unable to lift or carry heavy objects and must take medication that prevents her from breastfeeding her son. Additionally, her husband reportedly separated from her due to concerns over the infection.

Mr. Sattrach stated that the appeal seeks compensation not only for past suffering and medical costs but also for potential future health risks resulting from medical negligence.

The appeal has been submitted to the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Public Health Office via the provincial complaints centre, which will review the claim in accordance with legal and medical procedures.
