A newborn baby girl was discovered dead in a pile of rubbish outside an apartment building in Bangkok’s Ekkamai district, prompting a police investigation to trace the person responsible.

Officers from Thonglor Police Station were alerted at 08:50 on 28 August, after a refuse collector found the infant among the waste on Soi Ekkamai 7, off Sukhumvit Road in Watthana district.

Forensic teams from Chulalongkorn Hospital and police evidence units attended the scene. The baby, believed to have been recently born, was found lying face down in a translucent plastic bag, wrapped in clothing and a sleeping outfit. The body showed traces of blood but no visible injuries and the umbilical cord was still attached.

The refuse collector who discovered the infant said the body had been concealed within the apartment’s waste chute and was only noticed when sorting through the rubbish. “I have never seen anything like this before. It was shocking,” he said.

Authorities cordoned off the area and reviewed CCTV from surrounding buildings to identify the mother or anyone involved. The body has been sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital for a detailed post-mortem to establish the exact cause and time of death.

Police are also interviewing local residents and staff at the apartment as part of their ongoing investigation.

The discovery has left local residents horrified. “It is heartbreaking and cruel,” one witness said. “I cannot believe someone could abandon a newborn like this.”

I can never understand when this happens. I know it's likely a very young girl who was afraid to have her parents find out she was pregnant, but they can always give a baby up to the proper channels to find a family for it. This is the third I can remember this year alone here. Life means more than some think.
