A Malaysian national, aged 45, has been apprehended in Songkhla for attempting to smuggle military-grade weapons and over 400 rounds of ammunition into Thailand. The man, identified as Yeb Sun Ee, confessed to being hired by a fellow Malaysian and promised 70,000 baht for the task.

Authorities, led by Police Colonel Surachit Phetchajom, announced Yeb's arrest following a joint operation with administrative and military officials. The apprehension took place on August 30 at a checkpoint on Kanchanavanich Road in the Sadao district.

During a routine stop, officers noticed Yeb's suspicious demeanour. A search of his Malaysian-registered white Kia Optima revealed two M4 rifles and 300 rounds of 5.56 calibre bullets hidden beneath a floor mat, alongside an additional 100 rounds of various calibres.

Upon questioning, Yeb displayed signs of incoherence, later admitting to methamphetamine use. A urine test confirmed this, as reported by MGR Online. Yeb confessed to being hired in Penang, Malaysia, to transport the firearms out of the country for about 76,500 baht. He stressed that the operation was unrelated to the ongoing conflicts in Thailand's southern border provinces.

He now faces several charges, including unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, use of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine) without permission, and driving under the influence.

Police Colonel Surachit noted that Yeb's arrest might be linked to a larger international arms trafficking network. Evidence suggests he might have been involved in similar smuggling activities before, consistent with his legal issues in Malaysia.

Thai authorities are now pursuing leads to dismantle the broader network and bring all involved to justice. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating illegal arms trafficking in the region.
