A three-year-old boy drowned after jumping into a fast-flowing river in front of his grandparents in Chumphon province. The child’s body was carried 3 kilometres downstream before being recovered.

Rescue teams from Sawang Sattha Aree, led by Mr. Sarawut Suksri, 48, launched a search after the boy went missing. His body was eventually found beneath a pile of logs in Khlong Pong, about three kilometres from where the incident occurred.

The boy, named Kan, lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Ussa, 53, and her husband in Moo 11, Lamai Subdistrict, Lamae District. Kan’s mother, Ms. Thanit, 19, also lived in the household. On the day of the incident, Kan was playing near the river, which is around 50 metres from the family home and is known to the child, who had played there before.

According to Mrs. Ussa, Kan suddenly ran to the river and jumped in before she could reach him. The water was nearly two metres deep and flowing strongly, carrying Kan away before she could intervene. She alerted neighbours and her husband, who rushed to help.

Police and local authorities, including Deputy Superintendent Pachar Aumthongdee, District Senior Official Dr. Silpachai Chanmeesri and village headman Mr. Somsak Sriyupak, joined rescue teams and local residents in a search along the river. Kan’s body was recovered downstream with a wound above his right eyebrow, likely caused by hitting rocks in the water.

The body was taken to Lamae Hospital for post-mortem examination, to confirm cause of death.

Once again, another irresponsible parent loses their child simply because they do not control their children and monitor their activities as a parent should. 3 years old and allowed to be 50 meters away from any adult supervision. Pathetic. I sympathise with the lose of their child but the caregivers should be given criminal charges for their lack of care to the child.
