The Faculty of Veterinary Science at Chulalongkorn University has launched a mobile blood bank, a gift from the Intelnovation Group, poised to transform pet healthcare across the Bangkok metropolitan area. This initiative promises enhanced collection and distribution of blood for pets, addressing a crucial need in veterinary medicine.

At a recent ceremony, the mobile unit was officially handed over, marking a significant boost for the university's pet blood bank, which has been operational for over 14 years. Dr Chaiyos Tharnratana, Director of the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, and Dr Suwarat Wadeerat, Head of the Blood Bank and Haematology Clinic, received the donation.

Prominent figures such as Arnop Chirakiti and Komol Chearavanont attended, highlighting the project's significance. Dr Suwarat explained the essential role of the blood bank in researching and developing blood products, alongside building a network of volunteer pet donors.

The new mobile unit allows the team to collect blood donations more efficiently, covering a wider area. "We can now travel to collect blood from pets across Bangkok," Dr Suwarat stated. Each donation is carefully tested to ensure safety and quality, and the team anticipates collecting over a thousand bags annually. These will be divided into several components, maximising their utility for multiple animals.

Donated blood is separated into various elements, enhancing the efficiency and reach of this limited resource. Dr Suwarat mentioned future goals in developing dog-derived albumin, with hopes for using Canine Albumin, a groundbreaking innovation, for further treatment options.

Blood compatibility is critical due to the complex blood type system in dogs, consisting of eight or more groups. Testing ensures safety and effectiveness before using any blood or components, underscoring the detailed preparation behind this service.

Beyond blood collection, the pet blood bank aims to establish a standard lab for comprehensive analysis, supporting both veterinary research and treatments for conditions like stem cell therapy. This forward-thinking approach will undoubtedly expand potential healthcare solutions for pets.

Dr Thanan Leelayuwa, Director of the Intelnovation Group, expressed pride in their contribution, part of the group's "Mission4P" social responsibility initiative. The project is expected to spur academic research and save countless pet lives.

The addition of the new vehicle brings the total to two, enhancing the region's capabilities in veterinary care. Collaborations with governmental bodies, such as the Police Dog Division and Army Veterinary Department, further underpin a communal effort towards improving animal healthcare.

This public-private partnership symbolises a crucial advancement in veterinary medicine, aiming to establish a more sustainable system across Thailand.

Pet owners can access these vital resources by contacting the Emergency Clinic at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, available 24/7 on 02-2189810 for enquiries about blood products for their pets.

In summary, this new mobile blood bank isn't just a vehicle; it's a symbol of hope and progress for pet healthcare, promising to make a tangible difference in the lives of animals throughout Bangkok and beyond.
