Durian and blood pressure

Featured Replies

Eat a hole durian yesterday, don't do it.

Today my blood pressure was 197/95.

Durian may affect blood pressure, with some sources advising caution for those with high blood pressure, while others indicate that moderate consumption of durian does not affect blood pressure in healthy individuals, though large quantities may alter heart rate and potentially increase blood pressure.

You ate 1-2 kgs of Durian ? (a whole durian)....

I just look at the stuff and the thought of eating it raised the blood pressure !!!

More seriously: I don't think durian can increase the blood pressure, I'd be cautious of believing sources which suggest it can.

With such hypertension perhaps be very careful, there may well be another underlying reason which needs to be investigated and treated.

I was once given a room in Bangkok that stank of durian. That certainly got my blood pressure up. I had to move.

If you already have high blood pressure you should only eat  a small amount. It has over 350 calories per cup, over 60 grams of carbohydrates. Those stats can raise your blood sugar level quite a bit. In those with normal levels, it's not a problem eating Durian, especially in small amounts, but again, it's still high in sugar so ...............https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10942912.2015.1083577#d1e282

Durian interferes with the metabolism of alcohol in the liver. While not fatal, the effects include flushing, heart palpitations, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Similar to a severe hangover.

I ate a small piece of durian once. My breath smelled like an open sewer for about 4 hours, and the taste was like overripe grapefruit. I don't understand why people crave the stuff.

After going home from work and relaxed one hour, my blood pressure went to 127/79, pulse 89.

Excellent for an 58 years old male

Love the stuff, guess it's an acquired taste and smell, love the smell of Durian.

I once had a cat that almost pucked by the smell, put some on her nose so she had to lick it off, after that she wanted more, every time she smelled it she come running and wanted some.

Same sphygmomanometer ???

I've had my blood pressure taken fairly regularly at hospitals in Thailand, particularly over the last couple of years given sporting injuries etc which have required repeat hospital visits and they do love taking my blood pressure and making sure I haven't grown or shrunk a CM...     At times my Blood Pressure has read 140/xx and I know thats not right - when I push them to change the machine it reads within an expected range of around 125/85...

This 'poorly calibrated machine' issue has occurred more than once....   and the reason I want them to re-test and get it accurate is so that a falsely high reading doesn't go on my records and then insurance excludes it as a pre-existing condition etc.

I only tried it once and felt like I took a bite of soft butter. Can't stand the texture but don't mind the ole lady and kid eating it in the house. The smell doesn't bother me too much.

I don't have insurance so not an issue for me, but those that do, should take their BP at home, at rest, w/photo of, and give that to the nurse.   When at hosp or lab places, can be 135-145.  Took mine this morning, at rest ...
