Bangkok Bank return a Wise transfer with valid details !

Featured Replies

I'm in the UK atm but returning to Thailand this month. I tried in the normal way, to transfer some funds to BKK Bank, via Wise as usual.

THB 60,000 has been returned 4/5 times by BKK Bank on the grounds that the details were 'different'.

BUT, they are NOT - I have made this transfer before at least 30 times. Nothing has changed. Everything is correct.

Probably best that I sort this out after my return but any ideas ?

I wonder what is going on ?

Similar last month with Kbank.

Opened a new account, then set up a Wise link.

Did a small transfer which went through in seconds.

Week later sent a bigly sum which was turned back without explanation.

What information does Bangkok Bank hold? What address do they have on record for you? Did the passport you opened the account with expire?

Try ringing their international helpline on 66 02645 5555

it's open 24/7.

Odd, I sent about $45,000 to Kbank a few weeks back via SWIFT wire (same as normal when sending USD for me) and it arrived the next day, in the evening.

This credit being applied in the evening is new, they used to come in the morning.

My transfer and the OP's (I believe) were normal Wise transfers using Wise accounts, not SWIFT.

Not same-same.

After KBank for unknown reason refused my transfer, I "wised" the funds, plus 3 more large transfers to my BKK Bank account without issue.

Thanks all for the replies . . . .

Farmer thanks, I should be ok on all those points. I'll try that phone no. next week, again, (after speaking to BKK London, they gave me that no. but I was met with a blank tone).

Hey one disadvantage of the situation, Wise take up to 10 days to return the funds sent, (£1,500). By the time I get that I'll be in Thailand.

Generally Wise are brilliant, (in my experience) - this one is down to BKK Bank ! Good to hear the different experiences and thanks again.

I had the funds back in my Wise account within 48 hours, AND an email from Wise apologizing for the inconvenience plus next $17K transfer fee-free.

What we've found is that there was a technical issue with our partner bank which caused funds to bounce back to Wise.

Since all associated fees have already been refunded, we have instead credited your Wise account with a fee free transfer voucher for up to 13,000 GBP  or the equivalent in your preferred currency.

NoDisplay - I've had no similar from Wise myself. But thanks.

OJAS - I think it's probably unrelated - I did register my SIM years ago but you never know. I'll bear it in mind when I visit BKK in a couple of weeks.

There have been several similar reports to Bangkok and other banks recently.  One theory was that the names on the receiving account and the Wise account did not match exactly, and that if Transglo was the transfer partner their name checking appeared to be stricter than other transfer partners.

If you can see any discrepancy in the name, delete the recipient and set it up again with the name matching the name on the Wise account letter for letter and try again.

Just FYI.  Just had a US bank transfer to WISE delayed for a week..

Never had a delay before of more than half a day.

Occasional delays to Thai banks from WISE, sometimes 24-48 hours but usually less than 12 hours and often surrounding US holidays.

A delay from a US bank to WISE of this length, is very unusual in my experience.  It's concerning.

But have you renewed your passport in the meantime? If so, you'll almost certainly need to register again since SIM card registrations acceptable to the banking fraternity are based on the last 4 digits of your current passport number.

Another chore to be added, from now on, to notifying our banks of new passport numbers following renewal, I'm afraid.

OJAS thanks - that may be the problem . . . is it possible to register a new passport no. (renewal), to the SIM card online ? Anyone ?

Definitely yes with AIS pre-pay through the app.

Select "Profile" then "Update Prepaid SIM User" and follow the instructions.  You must be on mobile data using the registered SIM card.

ETA.  Don't know how that'll work from the UK.  Maybe have to ensure roaming is enabled and apply a one day data package.

Assuming that his SIM card is a prepaid AIS one, it looks like @TorquayFan would need to subscribe to a Ready2Fly package for which the minimum validity period appears to be 7 days!

https://www.ais.th/consumers/package/international/roaming/rate/uk/prepaid/all

However, since it looks like he'll be back in Thailand within the next week or so, he would probably be better off holding fire on re-registering his SIM card until then.

@TorquayFan - assuming that yours is an AIS SIM, one way in which you should be able to check its registration validity, even from the UK, is by dialling *161#

If you get some Thai text interspersed with the last 4 digits of your existing passport number, you should be fine.

Is your account at BBL still active? Not frozen? Some account holders need to update their security settings on Thai bank accounts. YMMV.

Have been having similar problems with Wise funds from UK to SCB. I mentioned this on a different thread as it had happened a couple of times 2 weeks back. Wise gave 4 options, one was to try again. That worked each time. Same happened in the last couple of days, again to SCB and an email from Wise indicating a name mismatch. Used the 'send again' option and it came through in minutes.

Obviously something has changed, maybe a new intermediary. In any event, no big deal at the moment as it has just taken a 'send again' instruction to resolve. But should that not work, that would be a hassle to resolve.

Banana - passport renewed but no other changes. The BKK a/c is still active.

PPGuy - I've tried 6 times over 2 weeks. Have used the 'send again' function too. Confident I can resolve this ok when I get back to Th. in 10 days time.

Thanks all.

I had to go to DTAC and get a confirmation letter that my phone number is registered to me to Bangkok Bank,

Two hours line with foreigners getting the letter at DTAC

Today I got the jitters. I made a bank transfer via WISE the exact same way as I did it the last three years. But the money was returned to my bank in Germany from where I had transferred to Wise.. Apparently something with my name was wrong. That happened three times in a row.

To make things short: the Thai banks have become stricter, I don't blame them for that, cannot.

When I registered with Wise a couple of years ago, I made a stupid mistake: I mentioned only my first and my last name. But I have a middle name as well. Up until now that seemed to be not a problem. So when I registered my account with Bangkok Bank many years ago I registered with my first, middle and last name.

I called Wise in Singapore and they gave me a hint. After several futile attempts I was - Thanks God! - able to change to my full name on Wise. The transfer I made then went through and reached my Bangkok Bank account a few minutes later. Ahh ...

Yesterday, at 2pm, I did a transfer from the UK to bkb, it arrived at 4pm.

And presumably some of those in front of you in the queue required multiple letters for multiple accounts with different banks!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm back in Thailand now.

I visited BKK Bank this morning and believe I know why I had the problem. I renewed my passport, (whilst away in the UK) and of course, the renewed passport has a different number.

However, IMO the different number  was not the problem. AFAIK, Wise don't ask for a passport no. anyway ??

BUT, BKK Bank have a passport number and an expiry date - so when Wise sent the number, in effect, BKK Bank didn't have an up to date record and rejected the money.

BKK Bank have now got my new passport details and have issued me with a new passbook, (same ATM card though),

Hopefully, my transfer from Wise will arrive today, now the records have been updated.

A palaver as usual with so many papers at the Bank. Quite how one copes with this if still out of Thailand, I have no idea,

There it is, ATB
