Body of Man in Military-Style Trousers Found in Mun River

A decomposed male body wearing military-style trousers was discovered floating in the Mun River near the Phanom Dong Rak border in Surin province on 12 September. The body was found around 11.00, about one kilometre west of Ban Khok Bot village, after locals reported the sighting to village headman Prasit Khruesri. Police from Phanom Dong Rak Police Station and rescue workers were called to the scene.

The river separates Phanom Dong Rak district from Ban Kruat district and the flow had carried the body until it became lodged against riverside trees. The man was found face down, bloated, and infested with insects. He was not wearing a shirt but was dressed in long trousers resembling a military uniform and sports shoes.

Rescue workers from Phanom Dong Rak Katanyu Foundation retrieved the body from the water. An initial inspection found no identification documents or personal belongings apart from a wristwatch on the left hand and a stainless steel necklace with a Buddha amulet. The body was sent to Panom Dong Rak Chalerm Phrakiat 80th Anniversary Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Village headman Prasit said the discovery was made by a resident collecting mushrooms in the nearby forest. He confirmed the deceased was not a known resident of Khok Bot village and that no recent missing person reports had been filed in neighbouring areas. “The deceased wore military-style trousers, but it is unclear whether he was a soldier,” he explained.

Police are now investigating the case, gathering evidence and working to identify the man and trace any relatives. The post-mortem will determine the cause of death, which is currently unknown. Officers have stated they will continue forensic checks and local inquiries to establish the circumstances of the death.
