A 15-year-old boy drowned on 14 September at around 15.45 while washing a motorcycle with friends near an overflow weir in Ban Phai Talom, Moo 6, Khlong Yang subdistrict, Sawankhalok district, Sukhothai province. The victim, identified as Mr Karn, was a resident of Tha Chai subdistrict, Si Satchanalai district. Emergency services confirmed that the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported that the victim had travelled from Si Satchanalai to visit friends in Ban Phai Talom. Three boys, including the deceased, decided to take motorcycles to the overflow weir for cleaning. During the activity, Mr Karn slipped and fell into the water, where he drowned.

The sudden fall shocked his friends, who immediately sought help but were unable to rescue him in time. Local authorities were notified and rescue teams were dispatched to recover the body. The weir, used by residents as a water source and for recreational purposes, has previously been identified as a site with safety risks.

Police have recorded statements from the victim’s friends to establish the sequence of events. Officials stressed the importance of exercising caution around water structures, particularly during the rainy season when water levels and currents may be unpredictable. The case is being treated as a tragic accident.

The body of the deceased has been released to his family for religious rites. Local officials are expected to review safety measures around the weir and consider issuing further warnings to prevent similar accidents. Authorities also encouraged parents to remind children of the dangers of playing in and around water bodies.
