Severe flooding has inundated six districts in Ayutthaya Province, impacting over 25,000 households and resulting in one death. The Royal Irrigation Department announced an increase in water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam in response to ongoing heavy rainfall. This measure aims to manage water levels but is expected to worsen conditions in already flooded areas.

Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas has led to increased water flow into the Chao Phraya River. Despite efforts to divert water into local irrigation systems, surplus water necessitates additional discharge through the Chao Phraya Dam. The National Water Resources Committee has approved increasing the discharge rate to between 2,000 and 2,500 cubic meters per second.

This discharge is anticipated to raise water levels downstream by 40-60 centimeters. Affected areas include parts of Sena, Phak Hai, and the banks of the Noi River and Bang Ban Canal. Low-lying areas, already experiencing flooding, will see further water encroachment.

In Sena District's Hua Wiang Subdistrict, overflow from the Noi River has submerged temple grounds at Wat Bandai Chang. However, the main hall and the principal Buddha statue remain unaffected. Residents living along the Noi River face significant challenges, many resorting to boats as transportation due to submerged homes.

Overall, the floods have impacted 87 subdistricts and 550 villages across the affected districts. Officials have reported that one person has lost their life due to the severe conditions. With increased water discharge, authorities warn of potential further flooding risks.

Experts and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for continued vigilant management and prompt response to alleviating further hardships. Assistance and resources are being mobilized to support affected communities.

Looking forward, the weather forecast suggests continued heavy rains, necessitating ongoing assessments of water levels and discharge rates. Authorities remain on high alert and are prepared to implement additional measures if required.

Key Takeaways

  • Severe flooding in Ayutthaya affects over 25,000 households.
  • Increased discharge from Chao Phraya Dam may worsen conditions.
  • Ongoing heavy rains call for continued monitoring and response.
