Residents of Lopburi experienced chaos on September 16 as over 100 monkeys escaped from the Pho Kao Ton Monkey Shelter in Mueang district. The monkeys roamed streets, invaded homes, and created commotion near the Tha Hin Police Station. Police officers had to use slingshots to redirect the animals back to the nursery as residents watched in alarm.

In response, Lopburi Municipality coordinated with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) to recapture the monkeys. Municipal staff used firecrackers to herd the animals back into the nursery, although some remained unaccounted for by nightfall. Officials are currently investigating the cause of the breakout, considering possibilities of both self-inflicted cage openings and potential human interference.

The municipality is taking preventive measures, such as reinforcing cages and increasing monitoring efforts to avoid future incidents. "We are reinforcing the cages and increasing monitoring to ensure this does not happen again," stated local authorities. Despite these assurances, locals are exasperated and demand that the DNP take more responsibility in managing the monkeys.

Residents expressed their concerns about the safety and welfare of both the community and the monkey population, which they regard as protected yet problematic. "The Department of National Parks should not leave this problem to the municipality alone,” one local resident shared with reporters from Amarin TV. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Lopburi in managing its monkey population, a longstanding source of both tourism and tension.
