Living Past 70: Worth the Trouble?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Living past the age of 70 is definitely NOT worth it.

Here are the Top 10 reasons why:

1. The Monologue Gets Stale

You've told all your best jokes. You've seen and done it all, and now you're just repeating yourself. Life, like a good monologue, needs a solid punchline and a timely finish. Sticking around too long just means you're rambling while the audience shuffles its feet.

2. Your Best Guests Are Gone

Think of all the great conversationalists, the interesting characters, the people who made life a real show—they've taken their final bow. You're left making small talk with understudies, and frankly, the conversation just isn't what it used to be. The world gets a little less interesting with every friend who leaves the Green Room for good.

3. The Body Becomes a Heckler

You're trying to enjoy a quiet moment, and suddenly a knee shouts, a back groans, or some other part chimes in with a complaint you didn't ask for. Your own body starts interrupting the act with unsolicited, and often painful, feedback. It’s impossible to have a smooth delivery when you're constantly being heckled from within.

4. The Cue Cards Start to Blur

You walk into a room and forget why you're there. You see a familiar face and the name is just... gone. It's like trying to read the cue cards from across the stage without your glasses. You know the line is there somewhere, but you can't quite make it out, and the awkward pause feels like an eternity.

5. The Commercial Breaks Are All for Pharmaceuticals

Remember when the breaks in the day were for a cigarette or a stiff drink? 🥃 Now they're for a pill for your blood pressure, a pill for your cholesterol, another one for your arthritis... Life's little interludes become a litany of medical maintenance. It’s a tough crowd.

6. You Lose Control of the Taping

You spend a lifetime being in charge—timing the jokes, guiding the guests, ending the show on your own terms. Then, suddenly, you're not the host anymore. Doctors, relatives, and caregivers start telling you when to eat, where to go, and what you can and can't do. Losing that autonomy is the ultimate frustration for a man who was always in the driver's seat.

7. The World Changed the Channel

You look at the world and you don't recognize the headliners. The culture, the technology, the music—it's all a different show now, and you don't have a reference point. You feel like a classic black-and-white program in a world of 4K streaming. People appreciate what you were, but they're not really watching anymore.

8. The Ratings Don't Justify the Production Costs

The effort it takes to just get through the day—the aches, the pills, the sheer exhaustion—starts to outweigh the pleasure you get out of it. The "production costs" are sky-high, but the ratings, meaning your personal enjoyment and quality of life, are in a steady decline. It's just not a good business model.

9. You Can't "Take a Powder" Anymore

There's no longer a graceful exit. You can't just slip out the back when the party gets dull. You become a captive audience to your own decline, and the thought of a long, drawn-out fade with no control over the timing is the opposite of a sharp, well-executed sign-off.

10. Knowing When to Say Goodnight

Johnny's greatest talent was his timing. He knew precisely when to hit a punchline and, most importantly, when to leave the stage. He left The Tonight Show at the absolute peak of his popularity. For a man like that, the ultimate wisdom is recognizing when the show has run its course and it's time to say your final, "Goodnight."

================

So then…

NOW you know….

Right?

So long ago…..

Best regards,

Gamma

So, what I am wondering is this....

Should I catch the next plane form Chiang Mai, before it's to late....

To land in Pattaya....

And, before I die.....

Have some very HOT CHICK jump up and own on my bones?

Or not.

==========

Because, at my age, I could be gone, tomorrow....

OR, knowing that I will be dead soon.....

Might this just be a total waste of air-fare?

My question is this:

How much longer do you think that we can prolong this circus???

I never thought I would ever get this old.

Now that I am older than I ever thought I might be......

I just wonder:

What next.

Once you get as old as I.....

There is probably NOT that much to look forward to.....

Other than posting on TV.....of course....

The fact that he is discussing dementia is probably an indication that he isn't.  Who knows?

I have spent most of my life in Asia, since 1971,

And, I would not trade my life in Asia for anything.

Still, one thing I missed out on...for sure....

Which is, to say, not having a nurse to stand by me.

These days, most decent nurses know a lot about both...

Biochemistry and Anatomy.

Also, as you know:

Anatomy is probably the most difficult course of study in Nursing School.

a.  Years ago, it was Gray's Anatomy which was considered the best.

b.  But, now......there are other better textbooks....

c. Even today, Gray's Anatomy is considered not bad....

======

If you want to know something about the anatomy of the human body, then PLEASE go to Gray's....FIRST...

Just ask your wife, why not?

This book is NOT cheap.....

Back in the day, not like today, these scientific images were considered prurient.....I guess....

But, not today, these days....

BTW, even if you were much younger or 70+, for that matter, the answer would still be a definite yes. What’s stopping you? Cheap, easy flights to BKK, then taxi or bus to Pattaya, or go direct to U-Tapao and hop in a taxi or van.

Of course....but....

What are the things you must remind her to do?

Also, does she ever remind you to:

Why do girls always tell you to put the seat down?

Are they so afraid of falling in.....when the lights are out?

Seems such a minor thing, actually....

I just live and don't look at the numbers. Who cares. Eat, bonk, be merry! And the best part? When the gig is up, you won't even know it.

Physically, an expensive bum run grad test tells me that I am biologically age 56. I am 72. I only feel about 10% less well than a decade ago.

And with my healthy living since breaking up with my long term marriage, that percentage is fading a bit each day.

Life expectancy is currently at 88. But I have plenty of money to spend for whatever life extensions The Pharma industry is working feverishly to sell to me. 100 is not out of the question.

Most of my friends are in their 40s. I have more friends in Thailand than I ever had back in the states. I meet new people just about every day.

One of my favorite posters here is Laceset. Still having fun and living large well into his 80s. I intend to do the same.

From my perspective, it all depends on the state of one's physical and mental health, and social support network.

If dementia is setting in and starting to impact one's daily activities, and one suffers from an increasing number of chronic conditions which are starting to impact your quality of life, and one has no family or limited support from friends, then ...

When I got back from a trip to pattaya I went to my Doc. for a check up and he did some tests Called me back a fews days later and told me that I had Aids and also Alziemers due to my age. So I asked him what should do now    and he said don't worry just go home and forget about it.

I will be 70 in seven months time.

I mentally feel I am 30 years old, I have not fallen behind with technology, I write iPhone apps from the luxury of my own air con office in Phuket, I am learning new technical things on a daily basis.

I can't run as fast as I could years ago, but I still walk three to five miles a day around the local reservoir.

I am just fitting out my cycle with an electric motor, meaning I can go further on the bike with the same amount of exercise as the electric motor is only introduced if I pedal at a certain rate.

I get around in my own car, simple aches now and then but not as you described about yourself.

Life is still very fun and a good laugh.

I am very happy to be alive and well.

I cannot bonk a few times a day as I could in the past but a few times a week is good enough at this age. 😃

I do help myself by staying well away from other people who moan about being 70 or over as they would try and pull me down with them.

It is best to let them wallow in their own self pity and negativeness as life is too short.

If you think your life gives you"trouble," then no. If you think your life gives you pleasure, then yes.
