Living Past 70: Worth the Trouble?

Featured Replies

The greatest words ever written about growing old are penned in the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Word of God by King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. We will all do well to take heed:

The Problems of Old Age....Chapter 12

1 Remember your Creator
    while you are young,
before the days of trouble come
and the years when you say,
“I find no pleasure in them.”
When you get old,
    the light from the sun, moon, and stars will grow dark;
the rain clouds will never seem to go away.
At that time your arms will shake
and your legs will become weak.
Your teeth will fall out so you cannot chew,
and your eyes will not see clearly.
Your ears will be deaf to the noise in the streets,
and you will barely hear the millstone grinding grain.
You’ll wake up when a bird starts singing,
but you will barely hear singing.
You will fear high places
and will be afraid to go for a walk.
Your hair will become white like the flowers on an almond tree.
You will limp along like a grasshopper when you walk.
    Your appetite will be gone.
Then you will go to your everlasting home,
and people will go to your funeral.

Soon your life will snap like a silver chain
or break like a golden bowl.
You will be like a broken pitcher at a spring,
or a broken wheel at a well.
You will turn back into the dust of the earth again,
but your spirit will return to God who gave it.

Everything is useless!
The Teacher says that everything is useless.

Conclusion: Honor God

The Teacher was very wise and taught the people what he knew. He very carefully thought about, studied, and set in order many wise teachings. 10 The Teacher looked for just the right words to write what is dependable and true.

11 Words from wise people are like sharp sticks used to guide animals. They are like nails that have been driven in firmly. Altogether they are wise teachings that come from one Shepherd. 12 So be careful, my son, about other teachings. People are always writing books, and too much study will make you tired.

13 Now, everything has been heard,
so I give my final advice:
Honor God and obey his commands,
because this is all people must do.
14 God will judge everything,
even what is done in secret,
the good and the evil.

And, before I die.....

Have some very HOT CHICK jump up and own on my bones?

Or not.

==========

Because, at my age, I could be gone, tomorrow....

OR, knowing that I will be dead soon.....

Might this just be a total waste of air-fare?

One of the cheapest places to die is Thailand.  Just get cremated and have your ashes thrown somewhere. No ceremony or funeral, just a donation to the hospital for the cremation.  Nothing is simpler.

with wisdom life becomes simpler as we age.  you finally understand that most of it is Ego and BS. wish i had discovered this 50 years ago.  we lived through the best  of times.  pity the young now, they don't know s^^^, and have lost the the curiosity that our generation had.  we read books, sent letters and and could actually look things up.  in short resourceful.

So much depends on one's state of health. I'm 84 and still enjoy life. So far, so good.

What you saying is what all old people have said and will carry on saying as the generations go by, I remember my dad saying a similar thing to me when I was young.

A letter, I have not written a letter as in post/stamp etc for decades, I use email which is more efficient, has proof of receipt etc.

A book,? The last time I read a book was probably 25 years ago, text books etc are out of date as soon as the ink has dried, especially in my profession, software engineering.

People can look things up a lot more efficiently nowadays, Google, the so called AI (which despite the hype does not yet exist, maybe in 100 years time), as long as you know how to filter and cross check the results, long gone are the out of date encyclopaedias etc, do libraries sill exist as I have not been to one in decades.

I have two grown up kids, one has a family and successful business in NZ, one is a biomedical scientist in a hospital in England, not bad for a generation who do not know sh**

I bet the young do not argue with your comments and probably just smile and nod thinking yet another old bleeder ranting on about the good old days. 😃 (Look up the Monty Python comedy sketch about the Four Yorkshiremen on YouTube)

Or the following transcript https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wVtYXCzkdjkws7lniHclUZpl6Of9hrKQprb6_YzRYjo/edit?pli=1&tab=t.0

I will be 70 next year, I do not feel old yet and am still very active on a day to day basis and I am still writing software apps from home.

Now it is the younger generations turn to do the grafting while I see back a little bit.

There was no tinting in malibukid's era, everything was in black and white. 😃

Since when did hospitals do cremations??

It took five minutes to write and would take three minutes to read, unless you have a problem with old age sight that is. 😃

Why did you bother replying to something you had not read.

I did not go to the shop today, or eat a biscuit, the list goes on.

What else did you not do today. 😄

I live next to a Dead tribute band and helped as a roadie at La Honda's Boots and Saddels. Downtown Pescadero has a favorite Dinner I loved.

@pchansmorn was correct in his comment.

Thai hospitals arrange for cremations through a charity they administer, I give to the charity once a year on my birthday.

Was that reply short enough for you to grasp?

Absolutely.  1946 was a wonderful year for some of us.

Totally agree.

When you think your time is up, just do not join the flying club! Better ways to exit this place and less messy!

Try not to hurt others and do it as clean as possible.

My experience start to smell 60, life is just getting better, and less expectations, and start to see things I didn’t bother about before as more interesting and entertaining.

Afterall, it is all in your mind, nowhere else

I met Neal Young in front of duraties restaurant he was driving his 1929 16 cylinder caddy smooth as silk and just purred (the car that is)Neal was a bit standoffish not surprised it was at the height of their popularity……good times!!good memories!

"LOL"-Kind of depends on if you are enjoying life. I'm 78 and I know I am Lucky and Blessed because I see the loss of a lot of my friends. I try and keep my mind set at a much younger age (18) even though sometimes my body does not comply. Good luck to those that are enjoying life at a senior age with a "Positive Outlook!"

As long as you have your health, it's all good.

True, but also with limited health, it is your brain who gives you the feeling of being alive and have something to live for. If you constantly cultivate negativity and negative scenarios it will contaminate your brain before or after or was it later.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, you can't take your brain with you.

I will refer you to my sister, who is 86 and  a participant who was on TV today at the age of 104 and won 100.000 dollars. Go and get knotted
