Change of Address for Motorcycle Registration / New Plates

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a few questions regarding updating my motorcycle registration/plates after moving from Phuket to Hua Hin.

1. Can this be done at the Pranburi DLT office, or do I need to travel all the way to the Prachuap Khiri Khan DLT office?

2. I purchased new compulsory insurance and a new tax disc in Phuket in July, just before my move. Can those be transferred/updated with my new address or will I need to purchase new ones?

3. What documents do I need to take to the DLT office? I'm assuming Green book, copy of bill of sale, certificate of residence, copy of lease, passport, visa, copy of insurance, etc.??? Anything else?

4. Any other tips or advice for making the process as easy as possible?

5. The bike was purchased new from a dealer in 2024, so I'm assuming I don't need an inspection.

Thanks very much.

There is zero reason  to do anything  no need to change number plates ...you can pay your tax and insurance anywhere  and they are valid anywhere in Thailand.

Hi John, thanks for the reply. I was told that I had to change my plates to the new province, or I could be fined by the local police. I was also told, perhaps incorrectly, that I'm more likely to be pulled over if I don't have local plates. Any truth to that or was I misinformed? Thanks

Assuming that you did actually get a proper white plate not still driving around on a red plate ?

There is absolutely no reason to change plates.. police pulling you over depends on what they are looking for that day..sometimes having out of province plate would be an advantage.

sweet thanks. That will save me a lot of headaches. Yes, I have a proper white plate, all my docts, always wear a helmet, don't ride like a maniac, etc. Thanks for all the advice.

Just agree.

Millions of vehicles with Bangkok plates over all the provinces (leasing/financed).

When I walk around Pattaya I see motorbikes with plates from most all Isan provinces 😁

You have been told nonsense.

Motorbikes are rarely pulled over from the plates.

If you wear a helmet, head lights are on and you behave like a human there is little to fear.

In Pattaya you are always more likely to be pulled over because you are foreigner. They hope to make money from you for missing driving license.

Is it any different in Hua Hin?

Tax sticker always clearly visible on the bike.

Great thanks, appreciate it. Tax sticker is visible and carry copies of all my other documents so hopefully I'm fully compliant.

If you change plates to Hua Hin, the DLT will inspect your vehicle and edit your blue book.

Yes but its totally unnecessary to change plates..just a pain in the bum for no reason.

Also motorbikes don't need to be inspected to renew tax and insurance until they are 5 years old.

I live in Prachuap Khiri Khan province but my car has Chumporn registration as I bought it there. Been like this for 10 years now and never had a problem. I renew the registration yearly at my local DLT.

If he chooses to change province he will be required to have an inspection

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I don't need to bother chaning anything over at this point.

I would say just not a bad idea to update your address at your insurance, just call or email them, handy if they send you anything (maybe renewal or other docs)...

Also if one day selling the bike in Hua Hin, it will be useful for the buyer if it's registered there, although he can do it himself too..., just need to also give him the signed power of attorney letter..

Thanks. Already updated the insurance. Will leave the rest for now and possibly look into it if I decide to sell the bike one day. Cheers
