Assault Allegation Raised Against Phuket App-Based Driver

A Chinese tourist in Phuket has accused a Thai app-based taxi driver of attempting a sexual assault. The incident occurred around 2 am in the Patong area, prompting her to seek assistance from locals. The woman was visibly distressed when she exited the vehicle, and details were later shared on the Phuket Times Facebook page.

The tourist had booked a ride to her hotel using an app-based service, but became suspicious when the driver diverted from the direct route. She demanded to be let out and quickly asked for help from people nearby. Although the driver's identity and vehicle details remain undisclosed, it's unsure if legal action will be pursued by the woman.

Local traditional taxi drivers criticized app-based services in the comment section of the social media post. They highlighted that several sexual assault cases involved these drivers, attributing such incidents to the lack of governmental oversight on ride-hailing platforms. Some emphasized the potential damage to Thailand's tourism image, particularly among Chinese visitors, urging serious action from government agencies.

This incident is not isolated; in August, another app-based driver in Phuket faced arrest for raping a foreign teacher. The driver also stole her phone, later admitting to the theft but denying the assault. Police dismissed his justification when he claimed he searched her for money due to unpaid fares.

Key Takeaways

  • A Chinese tourist alleged a sexual assault attempt by a Phuket app-based driver.
  • Traditional taxis criticize app services for lack of regulation and safety.
  • Prior incidents have raised concerns about tourism impact and regulation.

I thought the apps were more regulated.

But what if it's an attempt from the official taxi mafia to manipulate opinion and customers ? I would be more wary of being cheated in a regular taxi and feel safer in an app based ride.

In this case your comment or opinion has no meaning, or do you look like a hot woman?
