Hanoi’s trial of AI-driven traffic cameras has uncovered over 1,400 traffic violations in just half a day. The new system, launched on September 24 on Pham Van Bach Street, utilizes artificial intelligence to automatically detect and report traffic offenses. This immediate detection feeds into a central command center, allowing authorities to enforce penalties quickly and efficiently.

This innovative pilot system marks a departure from traditional cameras that merely store footage. Instead, these AI cameras actively analyze real-time behavior, capturing both 1,339 instances of motorbikes and 113 cars running red lights, as well as 343 helmetless riders and three instances of vehicles traveling against the traffic flow. This technology aims to address Hanoi's persistent road safety challenges.

The significant number of violations recorded surprised local traffic police, highlighting a "deeply rooted" disregard for traffic laws in Hanoi, according to one official. This widespread non-compliance with road safety regulations underscores the urgent need for improved awareness and adherence. The successful identification of violations through AI technology demonstrates its potential to revolutionize traffic enforcement throughout Vietnam.

Authorities are optimistic about expanding the AI camera system beyond the current pilot. Following its initial success in Hanoi and on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway, there are plans to install thousands more across various provinces. This expansion would shift the focus from manual enforcement by officers to automatic detection and fines, potentially transforming the way Vietnam addresses traffic infractions.

Looking forward, Hanoi police intend to continue leveraging AI technology to enhance road safety and compliance. The introduction of AI cameras represents a significant shift in traffic law enforcement, with authorities hopeful that it will lead to safer roads. They anticipate that the technology's ability to rapidly detect and report violations will act as a deterrent to future traffic offenses.

Key Takeaways

  • AI cameras in Hanoi recorded over 1,400 violations in 12 hours.
  • The technology shifts enforcement from manual checks to automatic detection.
  • Expansion plans include widespread adoption across other Vietnamese provinces.

Will not happen in Thailand anytime soon I think - how else would the BiB make their beer money for the weekend?

Even if Thailand tried installing these, they'd break down in three days.

Who said Vietnam was better than Thailand to retire in ?

It's becoming more big brother than euro nanny states.
