Prime Minister Defends Copay Project Amid Election Allegations

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has responded to allegations that his government is attempting to gain popularity ahead of a general election by renewing a nationwide copay project. Opposition lawmakers have accused the Bhumjaithai-led coalition of using the project to attract voter support at the expense of public funds. Anutin, also the Bhumjaithai party leader, claims the government aims to implement beneficial initiatives for the public promptly and effectively.

The copay project, initiated under former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, allows citizens to pay only half the price of purchases, with the government covering the remaining half. While the program has garnered positive public response, a previous Pheu Thai government’s 10,000-baht “digital wallet” project failed to launch as intended, largely affecting young people and fading out over time. In contrast, the copay program is being seen as a significant populist effort by the current government.

On another note, Anutin addressed the ongoing debate regarding Thai-Cambodian MoUs, asserting that no public referendum is necessary to determine future actions. The prime minister reassured that his cabinet is equipped to resolve the MoUs issue, which involves strategic projects related to undersea resources and maritime boundaries. Anutin stated that an investigative House committee is assessing whether these MoUs may compromise Thailand’s interests. Should the committee find them disadvantageous, the government might terminate the agreements unilaterally.

Nevertheless, public involvement may still be considered in some cases. Deputy Prime Minister Bowornsak Uwanno suggested that significant issues, like constitutional amendments and the Thai-Cambodian MoUs, could become subjects for public referendums. These decisions might coincide with the anticipated general election in March, allowing citizens to voice their opinions on new constitutional initiatives and international agreements.

Key Takeaways

  • The prime minister defends the copay project amid accusations of electioneering.
  • Anutin claims the government can handle Thai-Cambodian MoUs without a referendum.
  • Deputy PM proposes potential public referendums on key national issues.
