3,000 Daily Steps May Cut Heart Risk by 17%

A new study suggests that walking just 3,000 steps a day at a faster pace can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk, particularly for people with hypertension.

Researchers analysed data from thousands of participants and found that those who maintained brisk walking lowered their likelihood of heart disease by 17%.

Unlike the often-quoted 10,000-step target, this study highlights that consistency and intensity matter more than sheer numbers.

Even modest increases in daily activity, especially when performed at a moderate-to-vigorous pace, can strengthen cardiovascular health, improve blood pressure, and reduce overall mortality risk.

Experts emphasise that walking is a simple, accessible, and cost-free exercise suitable for most adults. For individuals managing high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risk factors, incorporating 3,000 brisk steps into daily routines may offer a practical, sustainable way to enhance heart health without the need for structured gym workouts.

The study adds to growing evidence that lifestyle changes, even at small increments, can have meaningful effects on long-term health outcomes. Walking faster not only improves heart efficiency but also helps regulate weight, blood sugar, and stress levels—key contributors to cardiovascular disease.

Key Takeaways

Walking 3,000 steps daily at a brisk pace may lower cardiovascular risk by 17%.

Intensity matters: brisk walking outperforms simply reaching a higher step count.

A practical, low-cost strategy to improve heart health, especially for people with hypertension.

"Our study demonstrated, for the first time, an inverse dose-response association between daily step count and risk of MACE among adults with hypertension. For each 1000 steps/day increase in daily step count above the referent 2344 steps/day, there was an average 22.3% lower risk of future HF, 9.3% lower risk of future MI, and 24.5% lower risk of stroke."

I was averaging 8,000 steps a day before the rains but it's down to about 5,000 now. Gotta get it up again now it's dryer.

I like the Japanese 3 minutes slow and 3 minutes fast alternate walking. It gets the blood pumping nicely.

Around here it's very hilly which helps. That last two hundred yards is a killer these days though.

Lift some light weights and do some leg strengthening too.

I wonder what's the cause and what's the effect.  Do people who take vigorous steps get healthier, or do healthier people take more vigorous steps?

I'm on the 10,000 a day routine.  Just for grins, I pulled up my Garmon watch app and I'm averaging 11,284 in the past 12 months.  And nobody passes me walking, so I'd characterize them as vigorous.

A few years back, I'd walk on the beach road in Songkhla where a bunch of military guys worked out jogging.  They'd pass me up when they were jogging.  But invariably, I'd pass them every time they stopped for a break.  They took a lot of breaks...

If anyone does read the actual study in the OP, post back with the answer.  I'm sticking with 10,000 steps.

Walking is essential for good health, and did you know they say your second hearth is in your calf ?

The phrase "second heart is in the calf" refers to the calf muscles and surrounding veins acting as a secondary pump to help circulation in the lower body. When the calf muscles contract, they squeeze the veins, pushing deoxygenated blood upward, against gravity, back to the heart and lungs. This "second heart" function is vital for venous return, helping to prevent blood from pooling in the legs and supporting overall circulatory health

And that’s why you should get up and walk every 45 minute or so

No doubt about that.

The study claims that 3,000 vigorous steps is better than 10,000 more leisurely steps.  I'm wondering, what was the basis behind that conclusion?

I don't claim to know whether vigorous steps are the cause or the result of better heart health.  What I do remember is the many times they have gotten things like that wrong and they had to do an about face years later.

You can walk like an Asian who used flip flops all their life, or like a western who uses his foot from heel to tip, and tip to heel form, which stimulates the leg muscles in a different way than just walk slow and flat.

I'm 80 yo and I walk 11,700 ( steps ) per day, that's 90 mins x 130 steps per minute. Which equates to burning 540 calories. Several times per week I walk 2 hours which is : 120 mins x 130 steps per minute equates to burning 720 calories. I enjoy my walks more in Bangkok than I do in Pattaya. In my Bangkok estate there's very limited soi dogs, the motorists drive a bit more careful than they do in Pattaya. There's no morons on motor bikes and last but not least I don't have to navigate the DPP, the Dreaded Pattaya Pavers.

Try to that after you had a stroke, as per the op, you just can't do it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some guys have been born with dodgy tickers and having pace makers fittted along with a defibrillator

Actually this is the most important issue.

The 3000 steps are just an eye catcher.

Most important is a healthy life style.

Watch your visceral fat is one of the key obstacles when getting older.
