Thailand's Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has assured that the recent US government shutdown will not impact Thailand's trade agreements with Washington. Speaking on October 1 at Government House, Anutin emphasized that the shutdown is a domestic US issue, and existing tariff agreements will continue unaffected. He acknowledged potential global economic volatility but asserted Thailand's preparedness in facing these challenges.

The shutdown occurred after the US Senate rejected a budget bill, marking America's first shutdown in seven years. Despite this political impasse, Anutin stated, "Thailand has already negotiated tariffs with the US, and those agreements remain in place." He mentioned that Thailand must focus on diversifying its markets to ensure economic resilience.

Anutin addressed recent layoffs in Phetchaburi, highlighting the need for regulatory adjustments to promote trade and income growth. He added, “Obsolete regulations must be addressed,” suggesting that ministers are aware of their duties, negating the need for new directives. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew also dismissed concerns of lasting disruption from the US shutdown, asserting that a resolution is anticipated.

While analysts caution that extended instability in Washington could affect global markets, Thai officials maintain confidence. They stress that Thailand's strategy to broaden market engagement is essential for sustained economic stability. Anutin reiterated Thailand's commitment to exploring new markets, strengthening regional ties with ASEAN neighbors, and tapping into emerging markets to bolster economic stability.

Key Takeaways

  • Anutin assures no impact on Thai-US trade from US shutdown.
  • Focus remains on diversifying Thailand’s market reliance.
  • Thai officials confident in strategic economic resilience.
