U.S. Lost 32,000 Jobs in September, Says Payroll Processor

Featured Replies

US private employers shed 32,000 jobs in September, the latest sign that the labor market is in a serious pullback.

The data out Wednesday from payroll processor ADP was far below economists’ expectations of 51,000 jobs added. Private payrolls for August were also revised sharply lower to a loss of 3,000, after data initially showed a gain of 54,000.

From the OP article:

"The drop in private payrolls was led by small- and medium-size businesses, though companies employing over 500 people actually added 33,000 positions in September, ADP said. By sector, service-providing companies — including leisure and hospitality as well as business services — suffered in particular, seeing a decline of 28,000 positions."

By industry sector.

There are 34.7 million businesses in the US.

And they create 54,000 new jobs in one month in a best case scenario?

Strikes one as rather low for 34.7 million businesses.

34.7 milion business create an added 29000 new jobs on average each month?

That can't be right surely?

It's a balance between jobs created and jobs lost.

Of course it's correct, or actually probably too high. Trump's tariff economy is killing the jobs.

Not to mention his attempts to foment violence between us some president ehh?

In Calif many businesses are closing up because of high crime for starters. Newsom's crazy high minimum wage and regulations for small businesses.

Big business leaving Calif for tax purposes.

Can't blame the feds for that.

Yes, so they should call it "Net Job Creation" data.

So ALL jobs created are counted and all jobs lost are subtracted and the net figure is what we are then told, eg 28000.

Clearly then the 34.7 million businesses create hundreds of thousands of new jobs, it's just job losses are set against that.

Now it makes sense, thanks Candide.

Making America great again, one person going broke after another.

Because that's what it means when most low-income people lose their jobs... no money for food that week. Or the next.

One family moving into a cardboard box under a bridge.
BUT... right now, we'll never know the true numbers because they have removed all the people from office who would provide them!

In particular, jobs lost in manufacturing. 🙂

Actually, what you have failed to take into account is the growth of the labor force as the American population grows. Even with reduced immigration, to keep the unemployment rate stable, a certain minimum growth number is necessary to keep the unemployment rate stable.

The numbers really are dismal. 32000 jobs lost in September while the August numbers adjusted down from +54000 to -3000 is scary news for economists and everyone else in the US.

So how are the numbers in your country, any idea. I think the same is happening in most countries around the world.

The two are inextricably linked, how could I fail to take account of it. If you have rising population growth, you are  almost guaranteed to have economic growth.

So when we have a recession it's clearly women's fault.

Let's do some fun math...

The WH says about 2.2 million illegals have left in the past 10 months, between voluntary and enforced deportation.

Someone...  Quick... How many jobs is that per month?

Seems like if the net is just -32K, then Americans must be filling around 188,000 jobs a month. (220K - 32K = 188K)

Maybe a few less because not all the departures are of working age...  And those represent a total drain on taxpayers*.

Edit:  * Except, of course, the kids that have been doing slave labor in the weed farms and those sold into sex slavery.  I'm sure they're adding to GDP somehow.

I'm beginning to get the feeling we're seeing one of the most successful trolls in AN history in action. Respect!👍

Well, you treated 28,000 net new jobs as positive thing in and of itself.

It is positive surely, better than minus 38000 net job losses.

And it's better than a mass plague too. But the issue is whether or not it's good news about the economy.

Yes, Trump's tariffs are destroying the world's economy. Big depression coming.
