Police have arrested two suspects in Chiang Rai for their involvement in a high‑profile online sextortion case that defrauded a victim of over 600,000 baht. The suspects, identified as Boonrit, 43 and Phakorn, 30, were detained in Phaya Mengrai district on 1 October 2025 following a coordinated investigation. They face charges including extortion, conspiracy, money laundering and involvement in organised crime.

The case began when a victim discovered a social media account using the image of a female celebrity. The account initiated repeated chats, eventually persuading the victim to perform a video call involving a self gratification, sexual acts under the pretext of becoming a partner. After the act, the suspect changed their approach and demanded one million baht, threatening to distribute the explicit footage to the victim’s Facebook contacts.

The suspects reportedly used the Facebook account “PORNPIMOL NAMFON” and the LINE account “Nomfon” to send the clip back to the victim as proof. The victim transferred 640,000 baht in four payments to bank accounts under Boonrit’s and Phakorn’s names but refused further payments and reported the crime. Police from the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), Human Trafficking Division, Chiang Saen Police, and other units coordinated to track and arrest them.

Authorities say the arrest follows a growing number of similar cases where perpetrators create fake celebrity profiles to exploit victims. Police have stressed the importance of verifying identities and avoiding engaging in explicit online communications with strangers. The investigation is ongoing, with further charges expected.

Police plan to present the suspects for prosecution to the Technology Crime Suppression Division, where they face penalties. Authorities are also reviewing related accounts to see there were further incidents.
