With the Billions he has got still can't prove were they have come from unless you can enlighten us all.

You tell me where as the PM he has the right Moral or otherwise to feather his nest.

How can you talk such total crap you astound me never mind.

Time everyone who actually cares about Thailand spend some time supporting it.

What a lot of rot! His money came from the sale of AIS! Obviously you've been on another planet for the last 20 yrs. I 1991 I got my first mobile phone with AIS, it cost me 4000 baht to call out and another 5000 baht to recieve incomming calls. These guys were making money hand over fist, that's how they got rich. It also made business a hel_l of a lot more convenient in those days when a land line from TOT took years to get in Bangkok, let alone the wait you had in country areas. He printed money with a monopolistic concession, corrupt or not it was his idea and being in the right place at the right time was his luck.......... so I don't know where you can come up with the idiotic statement of "where his billions came from without proving it"!!!!!!!!!!

There are lots of tycoons around the world who happens to be in the right place at the right time. Took a gamble of a new business idea. Mobile communication in Thaksin case, software in Bill Gate case, Search engine in Jerry case (the list goes on and on). Come to think of it now, it was a no brainer, but I really give credit to those to got in first and make tones of dosh out of it.

There are a dozens of billonaire around the world who started a mobile business just at the time before it took off. You want me to name some.

Also, the chances of making a big one is very low. Most people went bust because the new ideas didn't work, or the timing was just wrong. Some didn't hold on long enough, or cash out before it bear any fruit.

It's over to the police and the Attorney-General... will the new government insist they act upon their orders? :o

Ratchada land case verdict postponed

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions yesterday postponed its ruling in the Ratchadaphisek land case against former PM Thaksin and his wife until Oct 21, and issued fresh warrants for their arrest. The court's decision to delay the reading of the verdict, scheduled for 10am yesterday, was read out by Judge Thonglo Chomngam, who was accompanied by the eight other judges on the bench. Neither Thaksin, his wife Potjaman, nor their lawyers turned up for the court hearing yesterday. The prosecution team from the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) was present. The postponement went against expectations that the case would be wrapped up yesterday. The court also issued fresh arrest warrants for the couple and authorised police to bring them to court to hear the verdict in the Ratchadaphisek land case. The court told prosecutors that the Constitution Court had rejected the defendants' claim that the law cited by the NCCC to support their indictment by state prosecutors was unconstitutional. Seksan Bangsombun, chief prosecutor for special cases in charge of the Ratchada case, said the Royal Thai Police Office is obliged to try to bring the couple to the court. Hoever, police need cooperation from the attorney-general in seeking the couple's extradition from Britain, Mr Seksan said. The Attorney-General's team responsible for the task was ready to begin the process of seeking their extradition as soon as it had received a request from the police. The prosecution team has asked the court to seize the land from the couple if they are found guilty.

Tomorrow is the day for the first verdict on a Thaksin-specific case...

More political confrontation after Ratchadaphisek case : academics

Tomorrow, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Holders is scheduled to deliver its verdict on the Ratchadaphisek land case against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Pojaman.

The case is in the national spotlight as a critical point that could turn into conflict or vary the temperature of the political situation.

Head of Chulalongkorn University's department of government, Chaiyan Chaiyaporn, said no matter what the court's decision, the degree of political temperature in the community is likely to increase. The suggestion that all sides would accept the verdict cannot be a guaranteed reaction on the day, he said.

If the court finds Thaksin and his wife guilty, the PAD will be happy as it would be the first time Thaksin had been convicted after the filing of many cases against him. The pro-government Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship could oppose the verdict, he said. On the other hand, if the verdict finds the defendants not guilty, PAD could be unhappy and stage more rallies.

"No matter what the verdict, I believe the pressure will be on security agencies right after the verdict delivery. They would have to take care of the peace of the country and comply with the laws. There is a possibility both sides might object to the verdict," he said.

Independent political scientist Sukhum Nualsakul said if the court finds Thaksin guilty, PAD should be pleased and reduce its opposition against the government. However, the party would be unlikely to stop protesting against Thaksin's nominee while it continues to demand a change in Thai politics - the so-called new politics. The public would then question PAD as to why it continues its tactics to obstruct the government.

On the other hand, if the court says Thaksin is not guilty, the government would be encouraged to go ahead with its work, despite the number of cases against Thaksin yet to come. In the meantime, the PAD would continue to rally, he said.

Sombat Thamrongtanyawong, president of the National Institute of Development Administration, said if the court declares he is not guilty, Thaksin could come back to defend himself in the other cases he faces. His supporters would also be encouraged and have reason to back him. Even though the People Power Party was dissolved, the MPs could get together and join another party. The PAD, meanwhile, would not be able to do much as it must accept the court's verdict.

However, if Thaksin is found guilty, he would not be able to return to Thailand without risking arrest. PAD would gain more weight to protest. Whether PAD would stop protesting in that case would be up to the party's administration. The government would be hard tested -while the DAAD would face questioning on its continued support for Thaksin.

Nevertheless, Sombat said, violence could break out at any time, regardless of the verdict.

Another Chulalongkorn University political scientist, Trakul Meechai, said Thais would learn a lot from such a historic case. As a lecturer, he would discuss with students why Thaksin was found guilty and how corrupt politicians would have to pay. On the other hand, if Thaksin is found not guilty, he would have to discuss how the case was processed.

Somehow, PAD must accept the verdict while the government too should restrain from making any moves that would only hurt itself, he said.

Trakul said the Ratchadaphisek land verdict cannot influence Thaksin's other cases, but it could be an example for politicians not to contemplate corruption.

Triple tension

Anti- and pro-government groups appear to be on a collision course, with the possibility of violent clashes in Bangkok when the verdict in the Ratchadaphisek land case against Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife is handed down tomorrow. A highly placed source at the Special Branch Police office said police received information that three different groups will mobilise their supporters in Bangkok over the next few days. The groups are the anti-government PAD, the pro-government UDD, and a group of police supporters. The PAD plans to hold a rally outside CentralWorld Plaza in Ratchaprasong today and distribute VCDs and documents about the government's crackdown on its supporters on Oct 7 and will then march to police headquarters. The PAD also plans to gather at the Supreme Court tomorrow to hear the verdict in the Ratchadaphisek land case in which former PM Thaksin and his wife Potjaman are the defendants. UDD supporters and several pro-government movements from the Northeast and the North also plan to gather at the Supreme Court tomorrow to hear the verdict, the source said. A source at the Supreme Court said clashes between supporters and opponents of Thaksin outside the court are a strong possibility unless measures are taken to control the crowds.

Tomorrow we'll know...

Thai protesters march ahead of Thaksin land ruling

BANGKOK (Reuters/ 2hours ago) - Thousands of people marched in central Bangkok on Monday to denounce alleged police brutality earlier this month when two people died and hundreds were injured in clashes between anti-government protesters and riot police. The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which has occupied the prime minister's compound since August, said it was bringing thousands more to the capital ahead of a court ruling in a graft case against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday.

yes, if they deserve such credit, for NOT having stolen this money!

There are a dozens of billonaire around the world who started a mobile business just at the time before it took off. You want me to name some. Yes, there is a proverb which goes somewhat: "Behind big wealth is usually big crime" ...Taxin did help a lot to make Shin. or AIS what it has become and his crime is that he used his political position for it, later his money to position himself at the top of politics this is what his crime is, not wealth he has accumulated, but HOW!

Also, the chances of making a big one is very low. Certainly, especially to triple corporate fortunes in an period over 5-6 years whilst being the PM of Thailand! Most people went bust because the new ideas didn't work, or the timing was just wrong. Some didn't hold on long enough, or cash out before it bear any fruit.Well, in such case, if the state has been made your "customer" and the base of the corporate structure, you are the head of the government and of the business, the CONSTITUTION had been changed to save massive amount of taxes from the sale to Temasek Holdings how can such business fail?

Sorry, for correcting a few of the glitches in this post! But right is right and wrong is wrong there is till now not such a thing as "honest mistakes" or "white lies"...Corruption remains corruption, whatever, whoever, however!

A crime is a crime, a crime is a crime, a crime........as one verdict stated that "a man in the highest position of the government, has a high obligation to remain sound i morale and ethical behavior!"

This thread is about Mr.Taxin and his wifes wrongdoings, but there is a lot "mopping up to do", cause this so called "nominee government" is riddled with faulty people, who have only one interest, to enrich themselves as quick as possible!

Ans this however, can't be for the "good and better" of the country they are suppose to serve!

It's NOT a self serve supermarket!

the legal implications of this Arrest Warrants are very severe for him as a lockheed1011 posted.

thailand can now demand his extradition.

in most countries it will be a imidiate arrest or a house arrest pending the rulling of the extradition process.

undoubtaly he is in for a rough ride.

I think its likely that the only rough ride he will be enjoying anytime soon will be in his broken Rolls Royce. Theres as much chance of him being extradited from the U.K as there is of Sondhi tying the knot with Daranee Chanchoengsila-pakul. Mind you, having watched them both in action I think they'd make a lovely couple. :o

Judgement Day for Thaksin

The Supreme Court is today set to hand down its verdict in the controversial Rachadaphisek land case - a decision that will likely determine the political future of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

If found guilty, Thaksin could face a jail term of up to 10 years for abusing his authority while in office by facilitating a sweet deal for his wife to buy a prime Bangkok land plot worth 772 Million Baht from the state.

The couple were accused of violating articles 4, 100 and 122 of the National Counter Corruption Commission law, and articles 33, 83, 86, 91, 152, and 157 of the Criminal Code, which bar holders of public office and their spouses from entering into a contract with the state.

In preparation for the historic verdict, Pol Maj-General Amnuay Nimmano, the Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief, said about 300 police would be dispatched to provide security at the Supreme Court's division for criminal offences of political office holders.

The Supreme Court accepted the land case for trial in July 2007 after which arrest warrants were issued for Thaksin and his wife, who were then residing in exile in the UK.

On January 8, 2008, Pojaman returned to Thailand to report herself to the court and was released on bail. Then, Thaksin came back to Thailand and denied all charges during a court hearing on March 11, 2008.

On August 11, both defendants jumped bail, while the court continued its hearings in absentia. The court was earlier scheduled to deliver its verdict on September 17, but it was postponed to today.

Meanwhile, the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which has pressed for corruption and related charges against Thaksin, said Thaksin's supporters could step up their offensive if the former premier was found guilty.

A PAD source said there could be attempts to cause chaos in the city and attacks against the PAD camp at Government House.

Newin is missed in War Room

Thanks to the current political turmoil, 111 banned members of the defunct Thai Rak Thai (TRT) have found an opportunity to return to the political stage. A few weeks ago they set up their War Room in Shinawatra 3 Building.

They meet twice a week to analyse the political situation to enable the Somchai Wongsawat government cope with the turmoil. They reportedly play a vital role in giving directions to the PM. If events go bad, they are ready to hold urgent meetings.

The War Room brings together all the 111 banned TRT members, together with key men from the People Power Party. Together, they form a grouping powerful enough to decide the fate of the government. All the government's enemies are scrutinised thoroughly.

A study of the names of all key members reveals they belong to the party royalty, with direct links to the man in London.

Yaowapa, wife of the prime minister and Thaksin Shinawatra's sister, chairs the group.

Key banned politicians like Sudarat Keyuraphan, Yongyuth Tiyapairat, Warathep Rattanakorn, Pongthep Thepkanchana, and Chaturon Chaisaeng share the stage.

Government Spokesman Natthawut Saikua and Jatuporn Promphan - leaders of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) - are ready to mobilise supporters and counter-attack opponents every time they are needed.

PM's Office Minister Supon Fongngam, who oversees the Public Relations Department, regularly attends the meetings.

However, there is one key man missing. No one has seen Newin Chidchob join the club since Somchai took office. In the current situation, many think they need assistance from Newin.

"Our mission would not be accomplished without Newin. To fight the enemy, we need an eye for an eye policy. The men who can do that are Newin and Yongyuth. We need Newin," a key club member, who asked not to be named, said.

Yaowapa has agreed with the suggestion and promised to talk to Newin and seek his help.

While the temperature in the War Room, chaired by Yaowapa, is heating up, her husband is sending contradictory signals. This has surprised the key men. Many are wondering what Somchai really wanted.

"As of now we don't know the real policy. He keeps talking about enhancing reconciliation," another key man said.

For example, they are not sure what Somchai thinks of extending the contract of the "Truth of Today" programme on NBT channel. The contract will end this month.

"If we raise this issue in the war room, surely the hosts of the programme Natthawut and Jatuporn will want to continue the programme. So we may have to ask the PM directly what he really wants. If he really needs reconciliation the contract would have to end," he said.

The end of this story could prove whether the PM is afraid of his wife.

Judgement day for Thaksin, Potjaman

Ratchada land verdict to be announced today

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will today hand down its verdict in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase case against Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Potjaman. Thaksin is charged with abusing his authority while PM to facilitate his wife's purchase of 33-rai of land in Ratchadaphisek area from the Bank of Thailand's Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) at a discounted price five years ago. The reading of the verdict is scheduled to start at 2 pm. If the couple do not show up and the court finds them guilty it will issue warrants for their arrest. Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the opposition Democrat party, was concerned that whichever way the verdict goes, tensions between anti- and pro-government camps are unlikely to ease. The conflict could intensify if the government tries to provide backing for its supporters to confront its opponents, Mr Abhisit said. Pibhop Dhongchai, a core leader of the PAD, said the alliance will stay put at the Government House compound and will not go to hear the verdict at the court today, to avoid any confrontation with pro-government groups. Government Spokesman Nattawut Saikua, who is a staunch supporter of the deposed PM [and a criminal litigant in his own right for another case as a rioting gang leader], said today's court verdict would neither impact the pro-Thaksin movement nor change the political situation. The Government Spokesman said the verdict would not cause any change to the current political situation because Thaksin no longer had a role in Thai politics, as was the case previously. :D "The ongoing political conflict is not a confrontation between the pro- and anti-Thaksin camps, it's a fight between democracy and anarchy," he said. :o The court has told those planning to attend the reading of the verdict to comply with the law to keep peace and order on and outside the court

Another glaringly perfect reason to explain PAD's resurgence and basic raison d'etre.

The back room ties between the banned TRT execs and PPP.

This is like a shadow government, but not by the opposition Brit style,

but by the legally banned from politics and the current PM's WIFE is the defacto leader.

They seem to have their own private street mobs on call.

And they seem to have intent to control the government by any means necessary.

Which sounds like facism to me....

They just wonder if the PM is wanting to close down a TV show or not...

He gets to consider minor issues, the important stuff they deal with.

This is EXACTLY why there is talk of new politics and coups.

Because these low-lifes just can't back off from the goal of total

dictatorial control of Thailand for their own ends.

These people don't respect the courts, nor heed the will of the people

to end corruption. They want CONTROL and the cash that follows it.

End of story.

He of course doesn't even understand the definition of anarchy... snifff!

Maybe here is a coincidence?

Bomb blast hits residence of Supreme Court president

By The Nation (HERE)

A bomb blast hit residence of Supreme Administrative Court president Akrathorn Chularat in Chatuchak district Tuesday early morning.

Akrathorn was not in his residence in Soi Lardprao 25, Phaholyothin Road as he was during an oversea trip.

Police were alerted at about 1am about the bomb blast.

Witnesses said they heard sounds of motorcycle in front of the house shortly before the bomb exploded.

Police found a 10-centimetre pit about four meters on the ground inside the residence's compound.

Police found no sharpnels or part of firecrackers on the scene. They suspected that the attack may be intended to cause panic not to harm anybody.

As if we need to wait for the judgement before we know the verdict. If there were a Ladbrokes in Thailand they would not be giving odds or taking bets on this. Of all the dodgy deals Taksin pulled and all the human rights violations he commited its interesting that this is the one they have chosen to magnify. It is likely that they went through them all with a fine comb before hand and turfed out any that had a paper trail leading to people they didn't want to be exposed.

bangyai ... that is just a facile conspiracy theorists way of looking at it. They started with this case because it was the most direct and easiest to prove.

Pretty much a cut and dried case. Easy enough to follow.

He HAS no legal right, as PM, to let his wife buy from a government auction.

He HAS to give his wife permission to buy the land.

She got it for a ridiculously low bargain basement price, suggesting

other buyers were scared off and someone agreed to a price that

did NOT benefit the government and thus 'the Thai people', in it's public asset sale.

The lawyers tried to muddy the waters a bit, but apparently to no avail.

I am sure that they would love to convict him of more serious crimes such as the human rights violations that you mention, however somebody can only be convicted of a crime if enough evidence is available.

To sum it up RE this case and others: He got caught!!!

Judgement day for Thaksin

By The Nation (HERE)

Published on October 21, 2008

The Supreme Court is today set to hand down its verdict in the controversial Rachadaphisek land case - a decision that will likely determine the political future of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

If found guilty, Thaksin could face a jail term of up to 10 years for abusing his authority while in office by facilitating a sweet deal for his wife to buy a prime Bangkok land plot worth Bt772 million from the state.

On January 8, 2008, Khunying Pojaman returned to Thailand to report herself to the court and was released on bail.

A PAD source said there could be attempts to cause chaos in the city and attacks against the PAD camp at Government House.

................edit..........

Yaowapa, wife of the prime minister and Thaksin Shinawatra's sister, chairs the group.

...............edoit.......

The end of this story could prove whether the PM is afraid of his wife.

This is simply unbelievable, they make a fool out of the judiciary, out of everything!

This shows what it is all about...it doesn't look good at all!

Maybe we see soon a mass arrest of Thailands key politicians!

From what I have read I dont think this case is that clear cut. Admittedly there is probably evidence that all of us are unaware of but the stuff made public including Chuan Leekpai's evidence doesnt make it seem as clear cut as some. Anyway not long to wait, and also I am no lawyer :o

I persoanlly would have liked to see Thaksin tried for the drugs war stuff. It will never happen though. From what I remember there are some other quite strong cases too. I rememeber reading Korn outlining some of the the other dodgy sounding business deals and it seemed they sounded a lot stronger to a layman than the current case.

Interesting. They have basically set up a state within the state. At the moment they control the state itself but clearly expect this may not continue and have their own alternative version set up to fight back if they lose control of the government.

The Newin comment is intereting too. That they say they need Yongyuth and Newin to fight the enemy (its in the open now) means street stuff. These two guys can mobilize the masses for action. In fact Newin is probably the best at this in the country. Where is Newin? Probably sitign waiting for the call the call but he will demand a heavy price for his help. Will he flip to the other side? There have been rumours of him doing a deal with the military but to date these have not come to fruition. He also suffered a bit at theri hands after the coup so unless the PPP true believers have totally pissed him off it is unlikely.

Why did Gen. Anupong shuffle so many Bangkok military commanders?

The wife and Somchai thing just sounds like good cop bad cop act.

The wife and Somchai thing just sounds like good cop bad cop act.

That's exactly what it is.

Somchai with his baby face, polite wai to even the street cleaners, family living in a shophouse etc. is the perfect act to win friends among the masses. And he appears to be a very good actor, playing the part better than an oscar nominee.

however.....

Under that facade lurks a truely devious monster. There is no way in the world taxin would have chosen him and helped his progression othewise. What good would it do him if Somchai was really a moral person who is un-prepared to bend / break laws for the benifit of taxin and his cronies?

Hammered, whether he actually exerted influence is a moot point.

He didn't have the right to let his wife buy the land,

since the agency doing the sale was a government agency

and so several levels below him. Clear cut.

His lawyers have tried to say he wasn't the boss of that departments boss,

but he could fire that boss's boss, for not firing his underling; end of story.

He skipped town because he knows the facts and the law.

And when pastry gate went wrong and Potjamin got convicted,

he knew he couldn't exert presure and or buy his way out.

He go outta Dodge.

It really is like a bad Western movie,

filtered through Kurasawa and Ang with a touch of Tarentino too.

Either that and his wife and BiL stole his balls years ago

and he just plays his role as himself, easily controled milktoast.

She is the power behind this thrown, she wears the BALLS in the family.

Must be some genetic Thaksin malevolence gene.

Looks JUST like her brother with jowels... scary.

I strongly disagree with the view that there is not enough evidence to convict Taksin on human rights issues. In fact quiet the opposite is the case. In the Tak Bai and Krue Sae Mosque incidents alone there are hundreds of eye witnesses and even You Tube footage to provide evidence as if dead bodies were'nt enough. The military cannot be tried in the civilian courts but Taksin can. However, these cases won't be dragged through the courts as certain military figures would be implicated and that is clearly a no no.

The pro PAD posters seem to think that if Taksin can be nailed and ' new politics ' implemented then everything will be roses roses. Not so. It solves nothing. Even now people are waiting patiently in the sidelines to have their turn at the trough, the reward for ousting the previous gluttons.
