Eight armed men stormed a popular shopping mall in Sungai Kolok, Narathiwat, on the evening of 5 October, making off with multiple gold pieces from a store before exchanging gunfire with police and fleeing the scene. The dramatic heist left one soldier injured and caused chaos among shoppers as the robbers escaped in pickup trucks, leaving behind explosive threats and damaged vehicles.

The incident occurred around 18.30, when Pol Col Jetsadawit Inpraphan, superintendent of Sungai Kolok police station, received reports of a robbery at the Yaowarat Bangkok Gold Shop, located inside a well-known shopping centre on Prachawiwat Road. The eight suspects, armed with rifles and pistols, overpowered the store’s security guard, seizing his radio before looting nearly 100 baht-weight of gold from the display counters.

During the escape, the gang fired shots inside the mall, injuring Sgt Buriswan Radachai, a light weapons specialist from the 408th Military Task Force, who was shopping nearby. He sustained gunshot wounds to his right shoulder, left leg and cheek. The assailants fled in an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck toward Su-ngai Padi district, prompting police to seal roads and launch a pursuit operation.

As the robbers fled, they reportedly placed a gas cylinder suspected to be an explosive device near a U-turn outside the mall and scattered metal spikes across the road, damaging several vehicles. Emergency crews rushed to assist the injured soldier, transporting him to Sungai Kolok Hospital. Authorities temporarily closed off the area to clear the debris and ensure public safety.

Around 19.30, an explosion was reported near the Arkan intersection on Masjid Road, about 500 metres from the shopping centre. No injuries were recorded, but authorities believe the blast was intended to hinder responding officers. Later that evening, security forces received further reports from local residents that the gang had hijacked two pickup trucks, a white Isuzu D-Max owned by Ma-useng Jehma and a Toyota Vigo belonging to Karee Teng, in Paluru subdistrict, Su-ngai Padi.

Initial CCTV footage showed the robbers entering the mall through the left-side entrance, spreading out before one suspect jumped onto the gold display counter in front of the startled staff, who were cleaning chairs at the time. Police and military units have since launched a manhunt and are analysing security footage to track the suspects’ route and determine whether the robbery is linked to ongoing southern insurgent activity.
