Thailand’s National Mine Action Centre (TMAC) has reported that Cambodian forces have repeatedly obstructed efforts to clear landmines in Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province. The move aims to ensure the safety of personnel and allow local residents to use their land freely.

The operation, approved on 11 October 2025 by Air Chief Marshal Ugrit Boontanon, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, involves deploying specialised mine-clearing machinery. TMAC spokesperson, Colonel Siwa Wang-akarak, confirmed that the operation targets unexploded ordnance left from past conflicts. This area is part of Thailand’s humanitarian mine action programme under the Ottawa Convention.

Previous attempts to clear mines in Ban Nong Ya Kaeo have faced consistent interference from Cambodian troops. TMAC has assigned Major General Rangpirat Yaemkaset, Director of TMAC, to oversee the operation and coordinate with the Burapha Task Force to maintain operational safety. Reports indicate that Burapha forces have identified three locations with mines in the area.

The ongoing obstruction has raised concerns about cross-border cooperation and the safety of local communities. While Cambodia has previously accused Thailand of human rights violations along the border, Thai officials emphasise that the mission focuses solely on humanitarian clearance. The deployment of machinery and personnel is intended to reduce risks to civilians and restore full use of agricultural land.

Looking ahead, TMAC will continue to coordinate closely with Burapha Task Force and monitor Cambodian actions to ensure clearance operations proceed without further hindrance. The centre aims to complete the demining safely while maintaining compliance with international humanitarian standards.
