UK’s Gaza peace role under fire as US casts doubt

British officials have been positioning the UK as a central actor in negotiating a ceasefire and reconstruction deal in Gaza. But in a dramatic public moment, former US President Donald Trump questioned Britain’s presence, asking :

“Where’s the United Kingdom?”

and essentially sidelining UK

Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Critics seized on Trump’s gesture—shaking Starmer’s hand briefly then talking past him—as proof that the UK has been more bystander than power broker. Earlier, the US ambassador to Israel called the claim of a “key role” “delusional,” and Israel’s foreign minister republished a critique that the UK contributed nothing substantive.

Yet Downing Street insists the UK has been working quietly behind scenes with the US, Arab states, and European partners to shape proposals and build consensus. The government points to inputs from Jonathan Powell (Starmer’s national security adviser) and uses parallels to the UK’s peacemaking experience in Northern Ireland as influence. Some suggest the plan’s framework—particularly points on demilitarisation and interfaith dialogue—echoes elements of the Good Friday Agreement. Still, many analysts dispute how much impact the UK actually had on the deal’s substance, noting its similarities to a US-proposed framework under President Biden.

On the diplomatic front, Starmer has been actively liaising with world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, offering to help monitor Hamas’ disarmament, and hosting a summit on reconstruction that includes a £20 million UK aid pledge. But despite these moves, the UK’s future role in a governance or transition body for Gaza remains unresolved.

As public posturing gains urgency, the question looms: will the UK be a decisive force—or mere witness—in Gaza’s next chapter?

Key Takeaways

1. Trump’s public gesture challenged the UK’s claim to a central negotiating role in Gaza.

2. The UK insists it has influenced the peace process via discreet diplomacy and past peacemaking experience.

3. While hosting diplomatic summits and pledging aid, the UK’s precise authority in Gaza’s transition is still uncertain.

Well it is quite usefull to be able to blame them historically for much that ails the world.

No. That's what happens when you  stick your nose into  an issue where you have no credibility. The UK is seen as weak and unable to deal with extremists in its own nation. It offers empty words and little else and does not have the capability nor actual interest to do much else.

Why make an absurd comment like that? To date, the US was the only  country that was able to get the opposing parties to agree to a cessation of the war.The UK and France are minor parties to this and have little influence over the region now. It is Egypt and Jordan who are training the new security forces to be used in Gaza, It is rather telling when the Israelis trust the  Arabs more than the Europeans. It was the UAE and Saudis pushing and prodding Hamas to stop. All of this was done with the mediation and reassurances and negotiating power of the USA, and yes, the personal intervention of Trump. Starmer and the country he represents has been written off by the international community. The country is  effectively bankrupt and its military underfunded, undermanned  and incapable of defending UK interests.
