Thai Service As Demeaning

Featured Replies

Examples:

1. A restaurant server insists on flipping the pages of a menu for me even when I move away and try to do it myself.

2. A laundrymat worker stands there and explains every little thing about how to work the machine at a self-service laundry even when I avoid eye contact and obviously want to be left alone.

Does anyone else find this demeaning?

I'm a full grown man and feel like I'm being treated like a baby at many places. I don't need someone turning menu pages or telling me how to add soap to a washing machine 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is this just the Thai way, or is there a demeaning aspect at play? A control situation? I never see it happen with Thai's to each other.

Italian restaurant owner did that with me, to push me towards their expensive Specials. Didn't ever grace their doors again.

Perhaps their foreign bosses train them to do that...

Not likely if you post tripe like this.

  • It's not really service. It's a demeaning coddling. Similar to what one would do with a baby or child. 😅

Not really true, as a business doesn't need all customers, especially if they're in the wrong and causing problems within the business. Disrespect isn't ever a right thing, and people being people, many feel they are owed something because of who  they think are, and not because they are paying for something. https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbesbusinesscouncil/2023/01/25/is-the-customer-always-right/

Of course it's true!

No customers = no business = no money.

The customer is ALWAYS right!

Most customers aren't giving the businesses problems. They can do without those who do, especially if they are giving good service, which means repeat customers. read the link, it explains more.

I don't care what the link says - it doesn't negate the fact that the customer is always right.

That's why I am so rich, because I have always taken care of my customers, even the rude ones..

Something that Thai's need to learn.

The quote may refer to turning bad customers into good ones. A lost art these days.

A frustrated customer who is appeased is worth much more then a single satisfied customer, because they tell all their friends. They are worth a lot in free advertising, because it becomes a recommendation and not a cold call.

That's why a lot of places like Amazon and Costco give no questions asked refunds. It's not just to be nice or avoid problems.

I usually do things non-verbally, .......... The times I have verbally told someone I don't need assistance they seemed to get it, but they continue standing there staring looking slighted. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Yes, you are.
