Thailand officially begins its winter season on October 23, 2025, as announced by the Thai Meteorological Department. The Northern and Northeastern regions will experience the onset of cold weather, while the South continues to face heavy rains, raising concerns about potential floods and frost. This transition occurs about a week later than the usual date.

Historically, winter in Thailand signifies a drop in temperatures across the upper regions, accompanied by northeast or east winds, and less rainfall. However, the Southern region will still endure significant rainstorms, influenced by low-pressure systems and tropical cyclones. As the season advances, the coldest temperatures are anticipated from mid-December 2025 to early February 2026, with average minimum temperatures around 21-22°C.

Suchada Thaensap, Secretary to the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, clarified that not all areas will turn cold immediately. In the highlands and mountainous areas of the North and upper Northeast, including locales like Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai, temperatures could dip to as low as 7-8°C, fostering a likelihood of frost. For Bangkok, minimum temperatures are anticipated to hover around 18-20°C.

The Southern region, particularly along the Gulf of Thailand, is expected to experience ongoing rainfall, sometimes heavily, due to weather disturbances. This situation could lead to flash floods, thunderstorms, and strong wind conditions, necessitating precautions for residents in affected areas.

Looking forward, it will be essential to monitor weather forecasts and heed the warnings issued by authorities, especially for southern residents. In the coming months, staying updated on weather changes will be crucial to minimize disruptions and ensure safety during adverse conditions.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand's winter starts on October 23, 2025, with varied regional impacts.
  • Northern areas may see temperatures as low as 7-8°C, with potential frost.
  • Southern regions could face heavy rain and possible floods.

If you get used to high humidity all these months, with 33° or 35° celcius...and suddenly it drops to say 27° celcius...I guarantee that many will feel cold and it would be normal...

It's also the start of the burning season !

Best time of the year, love the cooler evenings.

Thank goodness it starts tomorrow, I still have today to enjoy the sunshine and 30C.

Last cold season was particularly long, well into February so will be interesting if this season is the same.

It's not talking about the Central and the southern parts.

Here on the upper-Gulf islands and coastal belt It started regular raining in mid March. At least we got a relatively cool April period - shielded by heaps of cloud. One of the earliest starts to the rainy season i have seen in 20 years of sitting on my kayak in the locale. Heavy too - and storms not tapering off after the regular main "storm season" - ie, April, May, June. Now, it is forcast to continue.

Don't get me wrong - i like battling head on into the raging SW monsoon on my toothpick of a boat. And dodging the lightning that tries every day to murder me personally is one of the main reasons i love being alive

 - but my plea to The Heavens >> Please.... blue sky, a cool NE breeze, and the surface of the sea looking like glass would be a verrry welcome change if you ever get out of this particularly foul mood you have been in for the past seven full months.

Sometimes, occasionally, (just like my wife) - you weather Gods can be a downright bitch.

With all the rain Thailand has had this Fall there is nothing that is going to burn for 2 months.

Thailand is more than only the north and Bangkok

Not really true anymore. The rainy season used to come to an end in October or beginning of November, in the central region that is, but global warming has led to more variability, with significant rainfall well into December.

December, in BKK, used to be 99% rainfree.

Personally, I prefer the Monsoon Season in the West to 'Winter' in Thailand... 😆
