Ho Chi Minh City police have dismantled a group involved in the buying and selling of stolen pets, detaining 15 suspects and seizing various items connected to the illicit activity. Officers from An Hoi Tay Ward and the city's criminal police identified N.V.T., a local man, as a key player in the operation. He was known for conducting nighttime transactions involving dogs and cats of unclear origin without proper documentation.

Earlier this week, at about 3:20 a.m. on October 15, police raided a site where they found 15 individuals allegedly trading stolen animals. Confiscated items included 21 cats, 26 traps, and tools likely used for capturing and trafficking pets. The suspects and evidence were taken for further investigation into their activities.

Authorities have revealed that N.V.T. was a central figure, reselling stolen pets to unlicensed eateries and processing centers. Some suspects admitted to using traps, tranquilizers, and stun devices at night to capture these animals. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover additional networks and buyers involved in this trade.

Police have called on residents to refrain from purchasing pets of unknown origin and to report any suspicions of pet theft or illegal sales. Under Vietnamese law, stealing pets can be prosecuted as "theft of property." Although Vietnam lacks a law banning the dog- and cat-meat trade specifically, related activities may breach public health and other regulations.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City police detained 15 suspects in a stolen pet ring.
  • N.V.T. was identified as a major buyer reselling pets illegally.
  • Authorities are urging residents to report suspicious pet activities.
