Thailand is strategizing to rejuvenate its tourism sector after a challenging year. A key focus will be on transforming the nation’s safety image and partnering with airlines to ensure affordable travel. The goal is to boost revenue by 8%, reaching 1.63 trillion baht in 2026, according to Yuthasak Supasorn, former governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Tourism figures saw a downturn in 2025, with arrivals dropping by 7.56% year-on-year to 24 million, and revenue shrinking by 5.85% to 1.1 trillion baht. To reverse these trends, the TAT aims to attract 34.9 million tourists next year, achieving a 4% increase. Enhancing safety perceptions will be crucial to attaining these targets.

Current efforts include marketing strategies targeting international and Chinese markets, involving chartered flights and digital promotions set for October 2025 to January 2026. Sales of 100,949 chartered flight packages have already been achieved, with significant discounts offered through online travel platforms. This initiative involves seven global companies and has facilitated 279,854 bookings.

Mr. Yuthasak stresses the importance of rebranding Thailand as a "Land of Smiles" that is safe and trusted. The "Trusted Thailand" project aims to certify 5,000 hotels and attractions, enhancing services and safety. Improving service quality in areas such as taxis and preventing tourist exploitation are also priorities.

The TAT plans to increase airline partnerships to maintain seat availability and reasonable airfares. Addressing rising costs is essential to ensure competitiveness with other destinations. The focus includes engaging high-spending tourists, such as health and wellness travelers and business tourists.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand targets a revenue increase to 1.63 trillion baht in 2026 by improving safety perceptions.
  • Efforts include chartered flights and online promotions to boost international markets.
  • Partnerships with airlines aim to keep travel prices affordable and maintain tourist inflow.

So, it´s nice that they see realistic numbers now, and don´t aim for 3,5 or 4 trillion.

"Trusted Thailand" - trusted by whom?  Criminals?
