A young motorcycle rider and his female passenger were killed instantly after the rider, allegedly distracted by his mobile phone, lost control and crashed into a lamp post in Bangkok’s Bang Na district. The fatal collision occurred on 21 October near the entrance of Soi Bang Na-Trat 16, along the Bang Na-Trat Frontage Road.

Police and rescue workers from Bang Na Police Station arrived to find the bodies of two victims lying face down on the leftmost lane of the three-lane road. The rider, an 18-year-old man from Samut Prakan province, suffered severe head trauma, with his helmet shattered. Nearby lay the body of his passenger, identified as Ms. Surinda Buadam, aged 27, who sustained similar fatal head injuries.

About 20 metres away, officers discovered the wreckage of a white Yamaha NMAX motorcycle, still bearing a red licence plate, lying on its side with visible damage. Bloodstains were also found on a nearby lamp post, indicating the point of impact.

According to the police investigation led by Pol Lt Anon Kasthaisong, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Bang Na Police Station, the deceased male rider worked as a Bolt motorbike rider. He had reportedly just purchased the new motorcycle the day before the crash, on 20 October. On the morning of the crash, he was transporting Ms. Surinda from the border area of Samut Prakan province to Soi Sukhumvit 48.

Footage from a nearby CCTV camera revealed that as the pair approached the scene, the rider appeared to be looking down at his mobile phone, likely checking GPS directions and crashing head-on into the lamp post. Both victims died at the scene from the force of the impact.

Authorities have since taken the bodies to a local hospital for autopsy and notified the victims’ families. Police are continuing their investigation to confirm the exact cause of the crash, but initial evidence suggests driver distraction due to mobile phone use. The incident highlights ongoing concerns over road safety and the dangers of mobile phone use while riding.
