A 29-year-old delivery worker in Nonthaburi has been arrested for drug trafficking after admitting he turned to the illegal trade to repay debt from losing a customer’s 1,000-baht cash-on-delivery payment. The man was caught following a police sting and dramatic chase that ended with him jumping into a canal in an attempt to escape.

Pol Col Siraphop Anusiri, superintendent of Bang Yai Police Station, directed a coordinated search operation with local administrative officers. Acting on a Nonthaburi Provincial Court warrant issued on 20 October, officers raided a workers’ accommodation at a furniture factory in Soi Moo 5, Sao Thong Hin subdistrict, Bang Yai district. The search led to the discovery of nine methamphetamine tablets in the room of Mr Nikhom Singtha, 46, suspected of distributing narcotics to local labourers and youths.

Following this, investigators launched a controlled purchase operation targeting Mr Apisit Doklamphu, 29, an employee of a major delivery company. During the sting, Apisit arrived on a black Honda Wave motorcycle with Bangkok registration plates. Upon police intervention, he fled and leapt into a canal, discarding a package of methamphetamine into the water. Officers managed to retrieve both the suspect and the package, which contained 578 methamphetamine pills and 50 grams of crystal methamphetamine (ice).

Apisit confessed that this was his first delivery, claiming financial desperation after misplacing a client’s cash-on-delivery payment of 1,090 baht. He said he accepted a drug delivery job for 2,000 baht to settle his loss, explaining that his monthly salary of 14,000 baht was insufficient due to online gambling debts. He insisted that the drugs were pre-packed by his supplier and denied any intent to disguise them as delivery parcels himself.

Police, however, remain sceptical of his account, noting that Apisit had previously been convicted of drug possession in 2019 and served two years in prison. He now faces multiple charges, including possession and distribution of Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine) for commercial purposes, driving under the influence of narcotics, and consumption of illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, Mr Nikhom Singtha has been charged with possession of methamphetamine. Authorities stated that investigations into the wider distribution network are ongoing.
